New Alex Van Halen set up

From OddBall

Now let me ask this, If he put them behind him on the left and right, could he not just swing down behind himself and catch e`m both ?? That`s what I`d do with them !!

I guess but I dont think he's into that. The bass drums are more for show & in fact he has said in the last Modern Drummer Mag article that he only uses the left bass drum to help out because his right foot isnt fast enough to play a shuffle beat.

I haven't heard the whole thing yet, but this new album is GREAT. Tattoo is probably the worst song on there.

Yeah Michael Anthony got the short end of the stick. I love the guy's backing vox too. But think about this - the only way they could replace him was by growing a new VH brother to be in the band! (OK, nephew.)

If you remember the Gary Cherone period (which, according to the thread, no one does lol), this album is lightyears better than that. You gotta figure Eddie was still high as a kite in that era.

Even when they did the first reunion tour with Wolfgang on bass, Eddie was still battling his demons. I saw the tour here in Oakland, and I remember looking at the big video screen during Eruption and thinking "Why do Eddie's fingers look like breakfast sausages??" Plus he kinda ended up missing some notes and flubbing some riffs, it was not the best rendition.

I'm not a Sammy-hater either, but Chickenfoot is straight boring.

A lot of people are criticizing this new VH effort by saying they re-worked a lot of old songs for it. But if you know Van Halen, this has been their modus operandi since the beginning! If you look hard enough, you can find the early Warner Bros. demo that Gene Simmons produced - it's a double album featuring songs from every one of the six DLR-era VH albums. All they do is sit at home writing! They are sitting on TONS of songs! It's always been this way.

I will admit, I would love to see the VH boys grow up. They haven't. The fact that this is an Interscope release is the most 'growing up' I've seen them do in years. I'd love to hear them jam with Bill Laswell, for example, and let him cut and paste the results into a "conceived and constructed by" instrumental Laswell album. Or have Steve Albini produce the band. Or ANYTHING besides the stereotypical VH album.

Oh well. Take what you can get, this is the best VH release in years.
