Paper in lugs?

The lugs of my '66 Slingerland set has brown paper folded and tucked behind the spring of the lugs. Is this a Slingerland thing or did someone do this later and any thoughts on why? Should I leave the paper?

Also, do guys thing I should reinstall my lugs with gaskets or back on like they were?

Thanks for the help!

Oh yea, I got the gasket answer by searching old threads. No gaskets for me.

Are you sure this is not aged felt? Pretty much all the old drum companies used felt & it was very cheap and still is. If you have paper in the lugs it is some kind of cheap a$$ resto & needs to be replaced with felt. You can buy it in the arts & crafts section of Walmart for a couple bucks. You're doing well & asking the right questions...we don't have a lot of female resto geeks out there & it's nice to get a Lady that is in to getting her hands dirty with a resto project! We need a little variety here because there are way too many "hard tails" LOL!

Good luck with your project, if you need any help, just ask...this is a great bunch vintage drum lovers that really need some female guidance.

I put some paper in lug casings on my drum sets. It has my name and phone number on it. I put it in there for identification purposes--in the off chance that my drums get stolen and I come across them, I can prove, on the spot, that they're mine...

My Ludwig Standards had foam that was very hard, my Super Classics had nothing, I put red felt throughout both sets.

My Star set came with nothing so I re assembled with nothing. The springs hitting the metal lugs buzzed terribly when I played with any force, so I put in felt. Buzz disappearedExcited

Did they origionaly have gaskets between the shell and lugs? I have seen gaskets on tom mounts, spurs and leg mounts on floor toms but not on lugs.
