1980's Mystery Supra

Loading...

Hi All,

Well, I just noticed a listing on ebay that described this drum that we've been batting around for a while. Seems this guy, whom I've bought from, and seems to know his stuff, has one up for auction. It fits what we've been talking about. The pix are exactly what I have.

Here's the link. Hope this helps

HELLO STIXOFIRE! The drum found on ebay is exactly like mine except mine is a 6X14" and the ebay drum seems to be a 5X14". Also there are no serial numbers on mine. The extra inch seems to take care of the problem some muscians have about the larger keystone badge interfereing with the drum head and changing the sound of the drum. If both size drums were played next to each other I don't think there would be much difference in their sounds. Maybe the 6X14" would sound a little lower I don't know?TMTM

This guy is a top-notch ebay seller and sells nothing but top of the line stuff. He is very knowledgeable about what he sells and I have spoken to him several times to ask about certain drums. I wouldn't hesitate to bid on this drum.

That seller could sell a glass of water to a guy drowning!

If that drum has 8 lugs, it's more of an acrolite than a supra.

To me, if supraphonic doesn't have the deco "imperial" lugs, it just ain't a supra.

But that's just me...

You are right: that drum may be a 8 lug bowtie drum. The drum I have is a ten lugger but has the same style lugs.I held it up against the picture and I agree with you. There should be another title for the drums with this style lugs, but if I ask the question "What say you" I,am afraid your answer may be too intense for this forum. TMTM

Thanks for all the feedback...Wow!! Yes, Gerry is a real salesman, but I've gotten great stuff from him.

On the lugs, his and mine, and of course TM's are Ten Lugs...Yes? On the Lugs again.., it DOES seem strange...I mean ...Bowties on a Supra, but I'm gonna check with Trent on this. Wouldn't it be a KICK if this were true? I mean...a Supra "Special Ordered" with Bowties!!!!??? Sounds a little "Out There" to me, but gives me more reason to keep checking!

I shall return!

Keep if Funky Boys!!!

In the '80s, I remember Ludwig sending out a bunch of metal drums with the bowties. Don't know what they called them, but I remember they were "budget" drums and were made with imported parts.

They still sounded great.

TO ALL! I,am expecting some more info about these supras in the next couple days. I,ll keep you posted, but BOY the snare listed on E-BAY is one beautiful drum and I only hope I can restore mine to the same condition. The mystery to me is why there are no serial numbers on some of these drums But still carry the Ludwig crossed sticks and the Ludwig Drum Co. Chicago U.S.A.on the bottom of the badge? The Keystone badge is the larger 80s style. It may have something to do with the anniversary sets I don,t know? I am not worried about the value are quality because these drums sound beautiful AND I,ll never sell mine anyway.TMTM

I can't offer anything more...I stop most of my personal interest in Ludwig drums at about 1975. Beyond that, the foreign trade thing changed all kinds of things.

Hey TM!!!

Mine is exactly like the one on eBay, and in the same, super clean condition! It was a poorly photographed listing, and I took a shot that it would be a decent drum. Description was that it was, "used but not abused" It carries a serial no. (Don't remember it right now) That's about it. Picked it up for $102.00! When it arrived, I fell out! Then began to wonder...."What's up with THIS baby!?"

We shall see....and YES.....She is a KILLER sounding drum!

Keep it Funky Boys!
