Bolero Drums Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Hi again, Jurgen!

The chances of posting pictures are pretty slim, my friend. I have not spoken to my daughter's "friend" in many months. I have not even seen where the drums are kept. The chances that he will ever repay me for the loan for his Boleros are even slimmer. That's okay. He has to live with himself.

You know, sir, I think the bottom line is this: If you enjoy these drums and take pride in them, then I guess it doesn't matter too much if they are Star or Pearl. I love the research too but, there are times when definitive answers are impossible to obtain. One "expert" will tell you one thing, another will point in another direction. That's fine. Most people are entitled to an opinion.

Enjoy your wonderful musical instrument, Jurgen!

Hi again Brian,

have to agree to your statement! And thank you for your kind words about my drums!

Main thing is: Enjoy the work while you restaurate those tubbies, and in this community you´ll find so many nice and helpful people who help you with words and deeds (and parts!). And afterwards enjoy them while playing and looking at them - and achieve nice comments and questions from some enthusiasts in the audience once you take ´em out on to stage.

But - the thing why I wanted to know for sure what my drums really are, was - I didn´t know what to write on the front of the bassdrumLoLoLoLo

Joking aside, I really also do enjoy to do some detective work and I always find it very interesting to read the comments of other members of this great forum. Also like the opportunity to do an exchange of experiences around here.

However, once you´re infected with the vintage drum bug, this is the best place - that´s what I found out for me.

Have fun!

Jurgen

You are absolutely right, my friend! There are many on this forum who are extraordinarily versed on these old drums that we love. Most of these members go out of their way to help others! They are wonderful people. Sure, ocassionally, there are minor disputes but, at the end of the day, I honestly believe that we do appreciate the other's point of view.

I notice that on your profile, you are a teacher. I was as well, Jurgen. I left early to pursue writing and music. I never looked back. Yours is a hard road, Jurgen. My deepest respect goes out to you, sir!

This new room is even better with Mic'd kits and all :)

I will put pics up of the finished kit when ready. I have never seen such a wrap as this blue pearl. As you say, its what makes MIJ so interesting and collectible..

Enjoy!

Jurgen!

kellyj has a set of "Bollero" pictured in this thread that are indeed Pearls. His are not Star, but in the grand scheme of all things drums, who knows why the European version of Star Bolero is spelled Blollero? No telling, but his are certainly Pearl. You can tell by the overall look of everything, like the lugs, they are the "long slope" Slingerland style and the floor tom mounts are stamped "[B]Pearl[B]".

Many people are unaware of the simplest of design differences between the Pearl and Star versions of the Slingerland Sound King style of lugs. The Pearl type have a longer "slope" at the back end, away from the tension rods. Also, the snare lugs, the SK type, are totally different from Star. The Star version of the SK snare lugs are virtually indistinguishable from the original Slingerland, even side by side.

Hi Jonni!

I indeed took note that the other one´s were Pearl.

No doubt about your facts, but in your last post you stated that Pearl had written Bollero and Star had Bolero.

I never wanted to challenge your knowledge - just wanted to show that at least on the badges of my kit it´s also written Bollero, although it´s a Star. No harm meant!

All the best,

Jurgen

Indeed! I made some bad experience on other forums, but never did here! Mostly it´s constructive criticism around here.

Oh, thank you very much, sir! In fact, I don´t know if I can stand this ´til I will be retired. But at the moment I´m fine with it. Before I became a teacher I used to work as a bicycle and motorcycle engineer - much worse environment in comparison with now!

And you can also be sure of my deepest respect that goes out to you!:)

Cheers, Jurgen

Hallo Jürgen,

glad to note that you're still into vintage drums.

To be political correct, your bass drum reso head should show the 'Bollero' logo instead of the Star one - nevertheless, the Star logo is more nice ...

In the meantime, since our last contact, you've been successful in buying a 10 lug snare drum (if I recall right, you were searching it once)?

Greetings,

Ralf

Morning. John!

Your above quote is "spot on" ! I think that I am beginning to become a bit addled in my old age. I confused the two sets of drums and somehow morphed them into one! Now that I've examined the pictures (including the badges), I certainly believe kellyj's are Pearls! To make matters more confusing, I will often compare my Supremes and Tempos against other Star and Pearl "brands". Jeez, John, things became muddy after 1974! Glad you're here, amigo!

Great thread amongst old friends.

Here's a pic of the floor tom leg bracket to help with positive Pearl identity.

It's interesting that Ravel's original score, "Bolero" is spelled with one "L". Bolero, Bollero, Tomato, Tomatoe...

An appropriate name for drums because of his incorporation of such lovely snare parts within the composition, hence the 10 lug snare....possibly?

The Luan Mahogany sounds as warm as it looks with nice round over bearing edges too!

Take a close look at the beautiful baby blue pearl. I can't stop looking at it :) Not sure if its stage worthy but will go well in the boudroir..This "ancient" Pearl is sitting on a modern Pearl stand just for fun.

Cheers brethren,

-kellyj
