Vintage John Grey Tom Hoop is out of Round

Loading...

I'm in the process of trying to restore a vintage John Grey & Sons Broadway kit. I had to put a new head on the 12" tom and when I tried to install it, it would not sit properly in the hoop. The hoop is just a tad out of round. Seems to made from some kind of cast metal with a chrome finish.

I've heard I can't use new hoops because the kit is not compatible with new hoops. But, I am not sure if this applies to just the snare or all the hoops.

I'd really appreciate any help/suggestions anyone might have for how to fix this.

'Carefully' push it back into round. Set the hoop on it's side on the floor then put pressure against the 'hump' in the hoop. Keep measuring until it is back in round. Shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to do. Also make sure it lays flat. A little judicious twisting and pushing should put it right.

Thanks for the help. I did some measuring and have found that the Tom drum from edge of shell to edge is 11.61" not 12". When I looked in the original john grey catalog online, it lists the mounted Tom as being 12". What's going on here? Could my shell have shrunk while it sat in dad's attic for 40 years.

The old head is also definitely 11.6" from inside of frame to inside. So I don't think the drum actually could have shrunk.

[UPDATE]

I remeasured the original head. it is a 12" head. but for some reason the old head fits in the hoop. My new Remo 12" head will not fit in the hoop. So I am not sure if the hoop is out of round or if there's something wrong with the new Remo (I'm guessing its the first of the two).

I've tried to pull the hoop into fitting the new head but it is being stubborn.

Should I just buy a new Tom hoop and see if it fits the old shell?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's not the hoop, it's the REMO head. What brand/kind is the 12" head that fits well? Get a new one of those, (you already know it will fit the hoop) tune it up and rock & roll.

Man, I'll bet the farm the drums are metric! REMO has a service they offer where they will make up a set of heads for you in metric sizes. It's a special order item and therefore more expensive than regular heads. But at least you'll get heads that fit!

Thanks.

Purdie: There are no markings on the head I removed. All I can say is that it's plastic with a metal headring.

Is this something Im going to have to get a custom head for?
