Vintage John Grey Tom Hoop is out of Round

From broadwayset

Thanks.Purdie: There are no markings on the head I removed. All I can say is that it's plastic with a metal headring. Is this something Im going to have to get a custom head for?

Yes, if the drums are European metric shells. Try REMO. They may have some metric heads 'in-stock' for you to order.

Please don't say "metric", it causes much confusion. :)

The heads are probably "pre-international" sizing.

You can order heads from your local shop or hit Ebay for heads.

Here's various sizes and head types:

BA-0110-PR- Ambassador, Coated, 10"

BA-0112-PR- Ambassador, Coated, 12"

BA-0116-PR- Ambassador, Coated, 16"

BR-1120-PR- Ambassador, Coated, 20"

PS-0310-PR- Pinstripe, Clear, 10"

PS-0312-PR- Pinstripe, Clear, 12"

PS-0316-PR- Pinstripe, Clear, 16"

PS-1320-PR- Pinstripe, Clear, 20"

BE-0110-PR- Emperor, Coated, 10"

BE-0112-PR- Emperor, Coated, 12"

BE-0116-PR- Emperor, Coated, 16"

BE-0320-PR- Emperor, Coated, 20"

Yes, these are Premier heads, they will fit any pre-int kit.

Thanks!

Here is an image gallery. I have pictures of the old batter head I removed, the new remo head that won't fit in the hoop, and some comparison shots.

Thanks again! This is really helpful!

That bugger looks to me like a snare head that was being used on the batter side! JRichard gave you a comprehensive list to work with. Trial and error at this point. Order a head and see how she goes. The pre-international sized REMO heads 'should fit' though.

Wishing you the best of luck...

Thanks for all the info on the pre-international size heads.

Two more questions.

1. I replaced the bass heads with Evans 20" heads and those fit fine. Why would the bass drum heads no need to be pre-international sizes too? Why do these Evans heads fit on the bass?

2. What about my 14" snare on this Broadway kit. I didn't see any 14" pre-international heads on the list in the reply above. Any idea about that? Would the snare just take a regular 14" or do I need to track down a special 14" pre-international?

Thanks again! This has been tremendously helpful!

My early 60s John Grey outfit has a pre-international sized 12 inch ride but the bass, floor and snare are not. The floor is an Autocrat, don't know if that applies to your situation.

The Pre-Int sizes were weird, snares didn't usually have the issue. Although I do have an Olympic that is one of those pre-int sizes and had to order a custom head for it as well as tuck a calf head for it.

A standard 14" head should work for the snare with no issues. The standard REMO hoops tend to be on the fat side and can be tough to fit. You can call REMO and ask to speak with Chris, I believe is his name, ask him anything and he can guide you to the perfect head for your kit. Check out REMO and look at their "Crimp Lock" heads, a much smaller hoop and shorter collar that can be made to pre-int specs are a better fit compared to even the ones I listed but the price can be as high as $15 more than off the shelf heads and a 6 to 8 week wait.

Purdy is right, that head was not a batter head, it might have had "Everplay" embossed in gold on it at one point, which was a Premier head back in the day.

JRichard - right again. I put the new Remo 14" on the snare drum and it fit perfectly. So no metric/pre-international problem with the snare. Just the mounted Tom.
