Pearl "Japan Rising Sun Flag" set

I am truly honoured to be in the company of such gentlemen as those who are members of this forum. My Dad, who is still alive, served in WW 2. I can honestly say that he was one of the lucky ones who came out of the ordeal unscathed in all aspects. I am very proud of him. I am also very proud to be a member of an organization in which people like wayne and teverson-sr can respect the opinion of each other in such an open-minded manner. Although I am a Canadian, if members care to read my post dated 07-01-2011, entitled, "A Canadians's Observations of Americans", they will understand why America means so much to me.

Brian

P.S. Sorry if I came across"preachy" but, I had to reply.

Just a drummer who loves all things about vintage drums! Nothing more, nothing less.

Reading your posts, I have to think a little. I think it is a cool wrap from the artistic standpoint and because my country wasn't EFFECTIVELY at war with Japan (maybe some Commandos members were Czechoslovak, but what do I know), I wouldn't consider it nearly as strong symbol as nazi swastika at the first glance. Then again, many people like the sickle-hammer symbol of USSR and wear shirts with Che Guevara and that makes me furious, as communism had hurt my country and people so badly and Che was one of it's prominent figures, altough living on the other side of the world.

Symbols derive their power from what people see in them, I suppose. Internet might teach us a little bit about communication and considering others.

I asked a kid wearing a 'CHE' shirt if she knew who the guy was. She thought he was some kind of 60's rock star...

Yep, ignorance is bliss...

I chuckled and told her to go home and read his bio. What a fine fellow ole' Che was. I wonder if she ever did.

From what I recall, that particular flag is controversial even in Japan. It is their military flag, representing extreme government power. I like the bold look, maybe in a different color scheme. Rare I would guess.

To settle the matter: the drum kit is made by Pearl, around 1983/84 and it's finish was called 'Rising sun' or also 'Ichiban'. Attached please find a pic of a complete kit (I owned it for a short time, some years ago).

More details? Here, please:

NB: nice extra on my kit: a 'matching' red coloured Lazer Ride cymbal, made by Meinl.

Watched a Sly and the Family Stone video on YT from the early 70's and the drummer seems to be playing one of these sets. But the colors seem to be red and yellow...Stage lighting? "Live on US TV 7/74" It's a Mike Douglas Show clip.
