Best Snare Stand for Tom Mounting

Loading...

Hello, I'm going to be assembling/restoring a 1970s ludwig kit and I've chosen to mount my tom in a stand instead of on the bass drum. I've always liked the way it looks but I'm having a bit of trouble finding the right one (not too bulky as most modern hardware seems to be). What do you use? Would an older wfl flat-base stand work for this? Thanks

I use a single-braced Yamaha stand -- definitely not vintage, but very sturdy, easily adjustable, and not grotesquely overbuilt.

I have a WFL stand, but it doesn't really hold toms very well -- it can't get small enough to effectively grip the tom. Mine's not in the greatest shape, though.

The Pearl S2000 shows up regularly as a recommendation when this question arises. It has some isolation features that aren't common to snare stands.

I have one, though I mostly use it for snares.

You may want to take a look at one, very sturdy and adjustable, not tippy. I seem to be in the minority--or perhaps I am just deafer--that does not hear a profound difference what drums sound like in this stand versus others.

That said, I like it a lot anyway--though it is my heaviest snare stand.

i'll check into the pearl! if i can find an old atlas/hercules stand that's what i'll go with but so far i've got my eyes set on the DW 6300. i've read some good reviews and it looks great. the set doesn't have to be period perfect, i'm just building a good gig/studio kit. thanks for the suggestions!

A friend of mine who works at a Mom and Pop music store (and runs the drum department) was showing me an adapter that mounts to the bottom hoop of your tom to make it larger, so it will fit better on a snare stand, and not sound as choked. So you can mount a 10" or 12" on a normal snare stand. It is basically just an extra hoop that goes all the way around, making the drum bigger. I remember it being a really simple, yet cool and effective design.

I cannot remember who the company is that makes these, and a web search came up empty. I know they exist though, because I saw them with my own two eyes. I'll get in contact with my buddy, and I'll get back to this thread as soon as I hear.
