Best Snare Stand for Tom Mounting

Loading...

You could try a Pearl ISS mount hung from a cymbal stand. They're relatively unobtrusive, and lighter than a snare stand. And it will probably leave you with more resonance. I used one on my Gretsch kit for years before going back to the rail mount, and always thought the ISS was an underrated mounting system.

I didn't like the look of the Pearl tube mount, so I drilled my ISS mount to take an L-arm mounting bracket instead. I put an L-arm on my crash cymbal stand and hung the tom from there. It's a good solution if you don't particularly care about maintaining the vintage vibe.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

Never underestimate the strength, versatility, and adaptability of a rail consolette in good condition.

I've tried many snare stands, An old WFL with the rivets on the two swinging arms tightened, sounds the best.

I have a Atlas and Hercules snare stand and I use the Atlas. Was never crazy about those tube legs on the Hercules. The Atlas is sturdy and you can get it close to the bass drum. It also folds up nice so you don't have to take it apart.

It would match your Ludwigs and be more time line friendly. They look nice too.

Don't know how hard it would be to find one these days.

I still say from personal experience that mounting a tom on any snare stand will result in some measurable choking. No matter which stand or how loose or how you set it JMO

I have had great results with cymbal stand tom clamp (if you dont wish to use bass drum mount) Hmmmm

I have an 80s Tama single-braced snare stand that does the job pretty well. I've also used my DW 6300 (flush-base), and it works pretty well too. As others have mentioned, the old WFL stands with the two pivoting arms sound the best, but unless your are a really light player, it's not the most reliable way to go in terms of maintaining the drum's position.

I'd used a snare stand with my 60s Gretsch kit, because the rail consolette on the 22" bass drum put the tom too far to the left for my liking. However, I recently picked up a matching 20" bass drum, and its rail consolette is closer to the top of the drum, so now I'm using it instead of a snare stand, and I must admit that the sound of my 12" Round Badge is even more heavenly than before.

The pearl S-1000 is the best snare stand for suspending a mounted rack tom. The stand has nylon bushings inside of the tubes to eliminate metal to metal contact that can cause buzzing, chocking, and vibrations. The suspension tips that hold the drum in place create a cloud for the drum to sit in (if you do it correctly and gently "pinch" the drum rather than set it down in the basket). The gyrolock tilter it like a ball and socket essentially without the downfalls of normal ball and socket joints. I could go on and on. It's all I use to tour and record. I often get yelled at by sound men asking me to dampen my rack tom because it "rings to long" and "they can't gate it properly" because of the resonance. And I know how to tune my drums, so they are not just being polite and think my drums sound terrible :D

For $80-90 it's t h e best stand IMHO.

I use my original 1977 Atlas 'Tom' stand with a 'RIMS' on a 13" Power-Tom or at times my 14x14 tom and it works GREAT > snare stands KILL a toms resonance.
