Mystery drum identified...plus thanks!

Loading...

Hey there, all! I had posted in another thread a plea for help in identifying a snare drum that my bf had recently acquired. We finally identified it...a 60's era Sakae Rhythm King! Special thanks to Barry for help in identifying it. Below are a couple of pics of the snare, after hardware polishing, new heads, a coat of bore oil, and new snare wires. Sounds great! Woohoo!!!

It's an MIJ stencuil...millions of them, most with 6 lugs, this one appears to have 8. If it is an early one, it will have a 3 ply shell, later will be 5, 6 or9 ply. The thcker ones actually will tune much higher. The "name brand" means very little as the stencil market was rampant in the 60s, slowly dying out into the mid-later 70s.. That drum was made by Pearl for some distributor somewhere likely in the upper mid-west region. That was the game in the 60-70s, Star and Pearl would build 100,000's of these types of drums/sets and put whatever name badge on it you wanted.

stedi, is this a 3 ply or 6 ply shell? The fact is it is a Pearl stencil. The strainer is the dead give away.

I have honestly no idea,...

I posted a picture of a few drums that were offered and didn't know the brand so I asked for help,...

Pure coincidence, on that same auction site, this snare was offered and answered my question. This thread helped Barry to answer Gellyfish question.

Yep, definitely a "stencil" drum. Attached are pictures of a WMP drum from eBay. The Red Pearl drum and pictures of the lugs and tension rods were from a drum in my past collection. As you can see, those lugs are very heavy cast metal. Also, note how much thicker, and well made, the tension rods are in relation to standard 12-24 rods. I also have an 8-lug St. George drum with the same lugs. That drum is in Oyster Black and a pretty cool drum!
