I also have an 8-lug St. George drum with the same lugs. That drum is in Oyster Black and a pretty cool drum!

Hi idrum4fun,

My first kit was a late 1960s St. George in purple marine pearl . The hoops on the snare were triple flanged, not the heavy die cast. An interesting thing on that drum was that butt side had adjustable tension.

That would have been a Star kit, the strainer system on that kit is called #940, Super Strainer and #941, Fast Tension snare bracket. I have a COS from the late 60s with that system, and it is so easy to get it tuned exactly where you want it! The catalog scan is here:

Hi Jonnistix,

Thanks for the catalog link. My St. George snare had an adjustable butt that was just like the throwoff #940 but without the baseball bat handle. It wasn't like the super strainer #941.

Hi Barry and Jonni! Here are some pictures of another of my past snare drums. Majestic branded, but certainly made by Star-Tama. Very nice 940 strainer and 941 adjustable butt. You can also see the "One-Touch" tone control... a real give away that it's a Star-Tama! I loved the Oyster Blue wrap!

Hi Barry! The first band I was in, around the late 60's I believe, I used another drummers kit. It was a St. George. I liked it better than my Lyra kit! Of course, I know now that they were pretty much the same thing, except for the color! Ahh... playing drums in the 60's. What memories!

Mark! That wrap, as you probably know, is simply called "Oyster Pearl". Here is a link to the catalog scan for anyone interested in researching your Star or Star stencil colors...

Hi Idrum4fun,

Maybe it had different heads and tuning that made it seem better.

You're absolutely correct... and I was aware of that! Just a vintage drum faux pas! DOH
