Shaft hi hats

Hello,

I am new to this site. I have been trying to find these hats forever. I bought some 14" 70s New Beats but they still have too much tick and not enough "chick" sizzle, if that makes any sense. I was told these are very light sounding, but can anyone give me any specific hats or weights to get? And do these sound like 14" or 13" to you?

And can I just get a lighter top and leave my new bottom or do the top and bottom need to be very light to get this high pitched sizzle?

Thankx

Welcome to the forum. I would go to your local music store and try out different High Hats until you hear the set that sounds good to your ears. Love That music clip from Shaft. Them Hi Hats do sound awesome. Cool1

Have you ever tried putting the bottom hat on top and the top on bottom? No cost to try that one and you'd be amazed at the difference.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I willtry that but from what I have always heard you want the top to be the lighter hat and right now my bottom hat is the heavier so putting it on top wouldnt be consistent with that theory. But I will try it thankx.

Sometimes, it makes a good job. See, I had this crappy brass hats. One pair was very light and the other one was quite thick and they both sounded awful. So I switched the light top with heavy bottom and I got very nice sounding hats (tough still nothing like bronze, of course).

Great track and wonderful drumming by Harvey Mason. I haven't met him yet, but that is one question I will ask him if I do, if he remembers.

They SOUND like 13" medium hats to me, but who knows, because cymbals were SO variable in those days.

Other hats in question (for me) are Ringo and KC & The Sunshine Band's Robert Johnson.

Recordings can be deceptive...the hats could be EQ'd and compressed (which changes not only dynamics but timbral qualities). They could be medium to heavy cymbals high-pass filtered (the lows cut). Or maybe even thin 15's...!

I remember seeing a Youtube video of Curtis Mayfield in the studio with his band debuting a new tune they were wroking on - Shaft. It is possible that the high hats used are in one of the shots.

Try searching Youtube for Shaft or Curtis Mayfield Shaft or Curtis Mayfield Studio, etc.
