Got this one from my good friend, Vintagemore2000. Thanks, Mark! It's the first component of a Levon Helm style kit I want to put together. I was inspired by another similar kit I saw here a week or so ago. I can't wait! It's going to be a B-52 Bomber of a drum kit when I'm all done. Stay tuned!

Either; 9"x13" & 16"x16" or 10"x14, with a 16"x16" or 16"x18". Haven't decided yet. The toms will have maple hoops and claws like, Levon's woody kit.
I'm leaning toward the bigger sizes in the toms. What do -you- think would be a good size combo for the kit?

I love 10 x14 or even a 12x15 on a snare stand but depending on your size they can be hard to postion I am working on a kit now 14x26,9x13 and 2 16x16's just easier for me to get around..
i would lke the 14/18 with the 26 bass. a 16 floor tom would keep the cost down though. the 18's can get pricey...

Lots of great suggestions. I do need to keep costs down so I will probably add a 13", 16" tom set-up to the BD. Anything can change, it's a work in progress. But 13, 16 just sounds more practical.
Anybody play toms with wood/maple rims? I'm curious how it changes the sound of he tom from metal hoops.
Mark - what color stain and what kind of top-coat did you use on the bess drum shell? I need to duplicate your finish on the toms.

I appreciate the offer! Thank you. But I need to start buying any supplies or materials I may require. I'm on a tight budget, need to figure out how much I need to allot to needed materials.
When you get a spare moment, (I know you're busy,) please pm to me a list of what I'll need. I want to have everything on-hand when the shells hit the door. We'll do the 'how-to' later.

Beautiful drum, congrats. I love seeing people build kits like these! You'll enjoy it. As for wooden hoops, IMO they're really warmer sounding than the norm. Are you going to use single tension marching snares?

Nope, I'm buying two new 6-ply keller maple VSS shells, staining them to match the bass drum, adding Ludwig 'Standard' lugs (close match to the ones on the bass drum, can't find any of those!) maple hoops, claws, rods and I'll be good to go.
Mark - What color stain did you use? Mahogany?
