50's WFL 14"x26" Bass Drum

john, the stain is Varathane, I started with 4 teaspoons Walnut with a 1/2 teaspoon of tung oil high gloss, 4 coats sanded in between coats 2 and 4 with 800 grit, then a mixture of red mahogany and Cabernet, 2 teaspoons of each color with a teaspoon of tung oil, sanded after 4 coats, then two unsanded coats is what you see on the bass drum before you now john, if you want it a little less red, use more of the red mahogany. good luck obi wan!!!:p

The Tung Oil is a great surface hardener! After two or three coats are absorbed by the grain, it dries and hardens. Good to have a hard finish on the outside of any drum. I always apply Tung oil with 00-00 steel wool. After it's all done, the finish feels like a glass mirror when you run your fingers over it.

I'm psyched to get started. This am gonna bee big fun! Car Driving2

I am adding some 'finishing touches' to the bass drum. Until I can secure some WFL badges, I'm using (paper-sticker) place-holder transition badges that I made awhile back. I want your opinions on a really cool Ludwig logo I found on the web. I blew it up and created a transfer of it that I added to the 26" head. I think it looks cool beans! Tell me what you think...

Mike - yup, Zephyrs! The shame is, I can't find any, anywhere. I ended up buying some 'Standard' lugs for the toms from *Tom/Vadrums. They're close enough in over-all style and they have a cool vintage vibe of their own. I don't think the difference in lugs is going to hurt the kit's eyeball appeal one bit. In fact, I like the idea of it looking like an old mix & match kit that somebody put together years ago. That's what I'm going for anyway.

I like your tom size suggestions. But my budget for this may not allow for an 18". I'm really on a tight 'love budget' with this one. I'd like to spring for faucet handle T-rods for the bass, but it's out of the question right now. I'm currently putting together some coin to buy the shells & maple hoops I need. I have just about everything else on hand. ie; lugs, claws, t-rods, heads etc.

ive dealt with tom twice with no problems....

you know something you could do....if you got the standard lugs cheap enough. you can take sandpaper and lightly go over the chrome and give it a brushed aluminum look. ive done it on older harleys quite a bit. just have to be careful to not cut the finish to down below the chrome. its an easy task and looks real cool. would tie in to those zephyrs......jsut one of my crazy ideas!

i like the kit youre putting together. i keep three kits. when i finish my vistalites and move them out, my next project is gonna be an all wood finish vintage kit much like what youre doing. i also want mine to be a mix and match kit. been thinking on it for years actually.
