Camco 6.5x14 Aristocrat - Rare Drum!

I did a straight trade recently for a 6.5x14 Camco snare. In my 15 years of collecting Camco drums I've never seen a 6.5x14. I got a call from a friend of mine that has a friend in need of a snare drum lug for a Camco drum and tells me it's a 6.5x14. So I called the guy up and told him I have a very clean part but I'm actually interested in your drum. So I met with him and brought along a 1920's Leedy 5x14 solid shell in blk lacquer (refinish), 1958 5.5x14 Leedy Shelly Manne Model in red/brown duco (old refinish), 1950's Gretsch RB 6.5x14 16 lug snare in silver sparkle and a 2008 George Way (Dunnett) 6.5x14 in BDP. He decided on the Gretsch.

Here is the drum after my cleanup. The bottom hoop was original second generation COB hoop but the top hoop was generic. I ended up replacing both hoops with first generation COB hoops since I didn't have a second generation top hoop in my parts collection. Many of the lugs were DW replacements so I replaced those with original Camco lugs which has now exhausted my spare snare lugs!

I have 16" and 13" COB Camco hoops>(1 of each) if you have anything to trade.......

Sweet snare! Man, how/where do you find all this Camco stuff? I think you got the better end of the swap deal.

Is there -any- difference between the Camco and DW lugs? I used DW on my snare and I can't tell them apart from my Camco's.

The round circle on the face of the DW lugs are larger than the ones on Camco lugs. Can't tell from a distance but up close I can see it. The inside guts of a Camco lug are completely different than DW.

BTW the finish on my snare drum is the rare Ebony Stain. Not a very sexy color which is probably why there are so few Camco drums out there in that finish. The Rogers strainer has the same hole pattern but I put a Camco Aristocrat on it as soon as I got it home :p

I hadn't noticed the difference in the size of the circle till you mentioned it. Yes, the guts are different. Plus the DW lugs can only take True-Pitch tension rods which have an entirely different thread pitch than anything else out there.

How many Camco/Geo. Way snares does that make for you Steve?

If you have to replace a broken Camco lug with a DW lug, the inserts can be swapped out so you don't have to use True-Pitch tension rods. I have a pile of DW lugs but they are pre-True-Pitch lugs.

So far it's 8 George Way snare drums and 5 Camco snare drums. Do I have a goal? Not really, I buy them when I can but unlike before, I no longer sell once they're in my collection.
