Tenor drum as floor tom?

Loading...

From norman931

The floor tom I'm using here is a 16x12 pre-serial # tenor modified with Ludwig mounts and ft legs. Complements the rack tom nicely, at a much lower cost than a vintage 14 incher.

You dwarf that kit!!!! What size kick is that? Hope I didn't insult you by making that statement...

Anything special as far as head choice and tuning? I know Premiers are not Ludwigs, but in many ways, a drum is a drum is a drum, being that construction methods are similar.

Got the drum today- gave it a quick tune with an Evans G2 and liked the sound. I didn't get to smack it around; however- it sounds like it's going to give me the note between the little and the big tom. I also bet that there's a bit of punch from the shorter depth. I will have to play it tomorrow morning.

It is definitely mahogany with beech re-rings like the rest of the Powerhouse kit from which I have used donor drums. I am a bit bummed about the slotted tension rods, but they can be dealt with by using a screw driver in a pinch...

I hate that I am going to get rid of the red sparkle, but there's no way I can abide this not matching the rest of my kit.

Update-

Tuned it up. It took a little while, but I got a nice, mellow sound using just three pieces of gaffer's tape (two bits on the batter and one bit on the reso, about 2"x2" pieces). I surmise if I used a batter just slightly heavier than a G2, I probably wouldn't need any gaffer's tape. Maybe a slightly heavier reso head would cure it, as well.

Now- I will have to address the wrap, as it does NOT match my kit.

lol! I'm 6'2" and the kick is a 14x20. I didn't realize how funny that looks till I saw this picture. Gotta start taking the bigger bass drums out on gigs!

I've got an Aquarian Modern Vintage on there now, which tuned up nicely with minimal fuss.

Hello, bunnyman!

Glad to hear that things are progressing! If YOU like the sound, that's what matters!

My Stars were also missmatched in their wrap. The original set was red sparkle. It was ripped to shreds. I got another tom. Different colour. A cocktail was added. A Star but, another ripped and different wrap! Many purists will disagree and, that's their right but, I think I understand where you're coming from. In my non-expert opinion, I'd say, "Wrap them all in whatever you like!!!" You are the one playing them, not some so called "expert".

My seven piece Star kit is wrapped in turquoise sparkle simply because I like it! They are MY drums and I use them. Go with your gut, bunnyman!

Come on though, man, why do you smell like cotton candy?

A friend of mine wears WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much cotton candy flavoured perfume. She gave me a hug. My biker jacket and hoodie smelled like her for three weeks!!!!!

Yeah- I don't see NOS Premier marching tenor drums being worth much. I would never do this to a NOS WMP Ludwig or Slingerland drum, even if it were a marching tenor drum.

Yeah- I think she will wear blue/white onyx.

Thanks for your support!!!

I am 5'8" and normally play a 24" kick!!!! I almost look as silly as Tommy Lee when he plays that ridiculous 36" kick!!!!

I got a decent tune with the stock batter for the reso and an Evans G2, but it needed three small bits of gaffer's tape. But she is a killer drum with a bit of punch. Glad I took the plunge.

Thank you, bunnyman for clearing up the mystery. That's an honourable way to end up smelling like cotton candy!

Here is a little drum set that I made out of Leedy and Slingerland orphans. The bass drum is a 70's Slingy 14x18 floor tom conversion. The small tom is a pre World War Two 7x11 tom that had a huge hole in the shell from a Sonor mount. The floor tom is a 12x16 tenor drum conversion from the 50's. I wrapped them in Rowlux 3-D floating bubble material. As fate would have it, I then found a 100% original 60's Camco Tuxedo lug snare drum in White 3-D Moire. The new wrap is pretty darn close to the old wrap. Check it out in the picture of the snare on top of the 12x16 drum. The sound from this tom is every bit as wonderful as a 16x16. Just find the heads and tensioning that work for you. Most of all, have fun with your project.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
