Yeah, except for the fact that Cherokee and Giant Steps are "jock" tunes that those kids learn first thing these days. It's like dunking a basketball. Many of them can do one or two tunes that they have practiced. BUT.....
...you ought to see/hear what happens when you take one of these jocks down into the territory of a ballad -something along the lines of a Shirley Horn tempo. THAT'S when you see what they are made of.

And that would all be well and good to do...except for the fact that it's a gig and it pays money and people are in the audience. So, allowing just anyone to come up and shoot their shot is an infringement on those things. Like I say, if it's a jam session, then it's fine to come up and expect to sit in because that's the point of the gig. People still shouldn't be drunk though -even if it is a jam session. And, by the way, I'm no teetotaler! Drinking is fine in the proper context. You just have to know your limitations and respect other people's gigs.
It's a given that all musicians are eager to play. But I see a lack of coolness these days. Musicians need to learn how to be cool. They don't teach them that in school, apparently.Burger Kin
