Late 40's WFL Restoration Project

As some of you might have seen....Im looking for a 16 inch WMP 16x16 floor tom to go with this kit. The previous owner's dad did a number on them in the 60's. Ill explain.

The story seems to be that dude bought this kit as a kid (The WFL New Classic Model I think) which didn't come with a floor tom, but it DID come with the New Classic/Ray Mckinley Snare! (score!) Later he added a floor, but it is a 1965 Ludwig Blue/Silver Duco floor. Soon he was style conscious enough to realize that he wanted his drums to match, and since the WMP was getting "yellow" which he didnt like, he decided to wrap the whole kit in this Turquoise contact paper.

He took the badges off to to the job, but thank the lord (if there is a lord) that he took the badges off CAREFULLY and then replaced them after doing the deed....so all of the original badges and grommets are present.

Last night I cleaned up the rack tom. It has some cracking in the pearl, but you can't see it from a foot away and in fact I think it gives some nice character to the kit. Two extra holes on the 13 from a 50's Slingerland floor tom leg mount that he used as a "L" arm mount to go on the 60's Ludwig consolette he added to the bass drum. Trying to decide what to do to fix that. Ill need some inlays (probably just do some Precision drum antique wmp unless someone has a better idea) and Ill need to wrestle the contact paper off of the rest of the bass drum and the floor tom.

The plan is (hopefully) to get the floor looking nice and sell it to finance my matching floor. If the paper comes off of the Duco okay, it will be a very nice drum. Its parts are 100% original including both heads, red BB muffler, legs, etc etc.

As sort of mentioned above the bass drum has a couple of mods, which I don't mind. It seems like he added Slingerland 50's skinny spurs, a 60's Ludwig rail consolette, and two 50's Gretsch cymbal mounts placed ala Buddy. They were all done very well, and give the drum some cool flare and functionality that I dig.

Obviously with the badges having been removed and the mods, this one is not a collector, but with some love I think it is going to be a fantastic player kit. Sizes are 24/13/16 with Ray Mckinley 6.5x14 snare. Front of the bass drum still has original calf head. Also has the original Speed King pedal and WFL flat base snare stand with all three round feet.

Im excited to get at it. Already cleaned up the rack a little last night. Today I am going to start with the tape removal. I don't think it will be too tough. All the hardware is in really nice shape....no rust or anything. Sorry about the crappy pictures. It was late last night. Ill get better ones as I get at this sucker!

Worked on the floor a lot today (as I am hoping to finance another floor with it). The wrap came off easy enough with the help of a hair dryer, but there was some serious sticky residue left on the drum. I managed to elbow grease through it though! The hardware on this drum looks new. All it took was a little good ol soap and water.

Pretty excited about this one.

Lookin' sweet! I don't mind the cracks in the pearl at all. It just looks its age, which I like.

Totally!

Tomorrow I tackle the bass drum. Need some inlays though so it won't be done for a bit. For some reason the lack of inlays on bass drums just bug the crap out of me. I am sort of torn about what to do. I think ill just get some Precision Antique WMP inlays....I just hope it matches close enough that it doesnt suck.

Anyone have experience with matching those up to average to slightly less than average yellowing on WMP? Any other ideas on what colors might look classy?

Thanks!

Alright! Here is a finished pic of the floor tom.

This drum is for sale if anyone is interested...but Id love to find a trade for the matching floor for this kit. One of the original heads was flawless, and I happened to have another one laying around here, so this drum has two un-played 60's Ludwig coated "Weather Master Tom Tom" heads on it. Pretty rad.

All original hardware. Chrome plating. Brass hoops, legs have their feet, all rods and washers are there, red felt BB muffler looks new. Its a nice one! Only crappy thing is that when dude wrapped it in that turquoise contact paper he removed the badge. I removed it again to take all that crap off and then re-installed it. Other than that though...this thing is as nice as they come. Not a speck of rust or pitting anywhere that I can see!

Here come some bass drum pics!

So I spent all day with the bass drum. It came out very nice as well. No issues. I ordered some inlays from Precision today. Gonna paint the hoops tomorrow and hope that the inlays come on Friday.

Here is a little time lapse for y'all!

It saddens me that no one on the forum seems to care about all the love I am putting into this old WFL kit. Potsy is my only encouragement (which I appreciate greatly)....and teenagebrain is really going out of his way to help me find the matching floor tom (which rules). Im not fishin for compliments or anything, but Im wondering if people think I did a bad job or something? Is this a bad kit? Do you know something I dont know?

Just sayin! Im surprised that there hasn't been but one comment! I feel like Im talkin to the wall here!

Hopefully my inlays come in the mail tomorrow. The hoops are all painted up and ready to go. Im excited even if you guys aren't, so there! ExcitedCool DudeYes Sir

Sorry you haven't got a lot of responses, I've been checking back to see what's going on with this too. So you're not the only one that's excited. I bet a lot of people have looked but not commented. You've done great so far, good luck with the hoops.

--Update on the other WFL kit: I got a sort of matching floor tom shell (70's, but at least its Ludwig) and the parts to make it whole again. Also, I found someone to trade the 70's spurs for some 50's ones. They cover up those nasty holes perfectly. I added a Gibraltar bass drum anchor for a little extra sticking power.

Thanks dude! I can't wait to see those correct spurs on your kit and that Ludwig floor to go with! Its awesome that they cover up the holes! So glad you are taking charge of that thing! Ill keep an eye out for a SS WFL tom for ya as well so that you can get it 100% if the chance arrises!

Im in the same boat as you though...if I can find a WMP Ludwig floor to go with my kit Ill be happy enough. I just want it to be keystone if at all possible. Heck...I might just play my 40's Radio King WMP floor with it in the meantime and call it good until I can find the exact one Im looking for. It could take forever!

Well,

Finished up the inlays today. They are quite a bit brighter than the original WMP, but its not going to be noticeable on stage. Its not a GLARING difference, but they do stand out. Its about to storm here so the pics I got kind of suck....Ill get better ones when the kit is all done, but for now you get an idea. Original front calf head. Repro logo decal.
