I have been following this restoration from your first post of this kit and I have to say it is coming along beautifully. I love this type project. Old Ludwigs too. I have always wanted a WMP kit. Hopefully I can find a project kit for that soon. Just missed a 70's SLingerland set I could have done a lot with. Keep going! I want to see this through with you. The inlays look fine. I had the same problem with my Premier hoops. The inlays are dark red and the color of the drums are Polychromatic red and you have to be on top of them to tell. Same as yours. Your going to have one nice set when your finished. There may be some type carnuba wax you culd dull those inlays a little, but I would not lose any sleep over it.

The inlays look great man! I don't think they stand out too much from the rest of the wrap. If you have any scraps left over from the new stuff, you might try coating them with some amber shellac to see if it yellows a little. I'm not sure if that would work, but I thought I heard it somewhere. It's worth a try if you have any extra.

Thanks Guys! I can't wait to find that floor tom! Hopefully I get some $$ out of the one I have on ebay right now so I can afford to pull the trigger the moment one comes up!

Ill try the shellac on a little scrap of inlay i have left over. Great idea! Thanks!

Thanks OddBall! Doing my best. Next I tackle the 13 inch mounting issue. I have a couple different options. Not sure which one I am going to go with.

How do people feel about seeing rims mounts on vintage kits? I feel like it would be a good solution to fill the holes in this drum and patch the wrap with the extra WMP I have from the inlays...and then get a Ludwig vibraband...but I could see the RIMS style mount totally ruining the vibe of this kit.

Gotta see if any of the holes currently in the drum lend themselves especially well to any of the more vintage style Ludwig L arm mounts or diamond plates. If so Ill probably go that route. If not....I might try a RIMS mount and see how bad it looks.

Ill report back when I get this thing under control. If anyone has suggestions Id love to hear them!

Thanks!

I see wmp WFL floors on the Bay from time to time.... your Duco should cover a good bit of what they seem to be going for.

Good luck on the search, it's half the fun.

I've been looking for a forties WFL floor with Zephyr lugs (not that that is what you are seeking) to complete an outfit for some time now. No luck yet, but I'm still in anticipation !!

I am not sure I understand the problem with your tom mount situation. Looks like the rail console has the correct parts except you need a correct L arm.

Is it the mount on the tom itself? If it is those parts are around. Probably from forum members. I would just get the correct tom mount and L arm and keep it like that. Just my 2 cents.

Well its tough, because the original mount was a hoop mounted type mount. Two horizontal holes in the tom from a mount that was likely not removable.

The previous owner of this kit had a couple of things installed professionally (likely at a shop because it looks FACTORY done). He installed a 60's consolette with an L arm, some 50's Gretsch cymbal L arm mounts, and some 50's skinny Slingerland spurs.

The one thing that was modified causing extra unused holes was on the tom. The original horizonal 2 holer was taken off and he drilled it for a 50's Slingerland floor tom leg mount to receive the L arm. So now the tom has 4 holes....none of which actually fit any sort of Ludwig pattern that would attach to an L arm or a spade.

SO...its either:

1. Patch all 4 holes (or just the two unoriginal holes and put some nuts/bolts in the originals) and use a RIMS mount

2. Patch all 4 holes and redrill for a classic L arm mount

3. Patch all holes and redrill for a diamond plate/change the L arm to a spade

Those are the options as far as I can see. The RIMS mount is the easiest and least invasive so thats why Im leaning that way.

Hey just curious Did you ever sell that floor tom? the one that looks like duco blue? Just curious how much it sold for because I'm going to buy a 60's duco floor tom when I have the money.

thanks.
