Advice on buying this kit

Loading...

I found this kit and am wondering if anyone can provide more info. This would be my first MIJ kit, and am not well versed in determining the year/make. I talked to someone about it, and there are no badges left. The wrap is obviously not exciting, but it seems deserving of some restoration. What do you guys think about the history or value of this thing? Would cleaning it up increase the value at all? Sorry, I have no other pictures and have not actually seen it in person yet. The 14" FT is not included. The other sizes are 12, 13, 16, 22.

When you go to see it, get the low down. As for cleaning it up and increasing the value...maybe. The 14 not included? Why?

I would need to know what the wrap is. Looks, from these pix, to be a Star, but could be be a transition era, from the 72-73 period. I would need to see the interior, some better pix to determine condition, but at this point, looks like no more than 125ish because there is no hardware and they are likely missing something.

Get more info, and if you can get better pix, please do. The wrap will determine some of the value. It does appear to have either Star's Fre-O-Matic or Pearl's hex-ball mount for the toms.

The guy on the phone said the 14 was actually part of a different kit and wasn't supposed to be in the picture. He also said everything is there as far as rims, legs, etc... No hardware though. They are asking $90 (it's been there for a while) and it sounds like there is still some room to negotiate.

It's about a 90 minute drive for me to go see it, so I'm trying to gather as much info as I can first. I'll probably go for it as long as the bearing edges are ok and all that. Thanks for the info, if anybody else has any, please chime in.

Offer $75.00, but go there and do it cash in hand, remember it is a retail store so sales taxes are in the future of this kit as well. I realize it is a drive, but that would be a great deal for your first kit. Whether 3 or 9 ply shells, this will be a good set to learn the ropes of restoration and reclamation, and preservation. I will be right here to get you going in the right direction and what to and not to do.

Thanks, I think I'll get it. It's actually not my first restoration, I'm working on finishing a WFL (trying to find a matching floor tom) - http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=19495

I still have plenty to learn. Mostly all the WFL needed was some cleaning and polishing. It's so much fun seeing what's under all that gunk.

I think my initial idea about the tom mount is incorrect. Looks more like spade (clip) mount, now that I look closer.

Morning, Potsy and John.

John, could this kit be a Supreme, a stencil of Star? From the picture, the bass claws and rods look identical to the hardware on my set. Lugs too, although the picture is not really clear. What do you think, John?

Good Day Brian! As you know, with Star stencils it could be any one of 100 names. In his area, likely to an Apollo, Stewart or Polaris.

Sorry Potsy, did not intend to infer it was your first resto, but you likely will be doing things to this kit you wouldn't normally do to American vintage drums. I would like you get some pix of bearing edges etc. posted when you get them home and torn down. I realize you guys all have real jobs, but with the economy the way it is, I've been out for almost 18 months, so I have all the time I want to do these projects.

Anyway, the edges will likely need some serious attention. Re-contouring the edges of these thicker shells is almost always in order. They have a funky profile in factory original condition, and most of them are damaged from years of neglect and youngsters playing without heads and other factors. We'll see what you think when you get them home.

The next fun thing will be locating a clean COS snare to go with, an era correct Star usually can be had for less than 50 bucks, including shipping, on ebay. Mine was mint-ish when I picked it up off ebay and it I paid like 23 bucks including shipping. Shipping in fact was more than I paid for the drum.

No offense John, 1 kit doesn't make me a pro or anything. I appreciate the advice, I'm sure to need plenty more as I go. I'll get some pictures up when I get it home. Hopefully it's not sacrilege to re wrap these drums, because I will likely rewrap or veneer them.
