Advice on buying this kit

Loading...

I bought it! It's in pretty rough shape, but I got it for $80. It'll be fun to see what I can do to it (without being afraid I'll ruin it). I'm not sure if it was rewrapped, but it wasn't spray painted. Whatever the weird flat black is, its an actual wrap and there's nothing good underneath. It's like a cheap cardboard version of a black panther wrap. Or maybe it was glossy at some point and has really faded. (the snare did not come with this kit)

Good news: 3 ply shells.

Bad news: somebody spray painted the insides, including the bearing edges. That'll make some extra work for me.

The 2nd rack tom must be from a different kit, since the lugs are different and it's exactly the same size as the 1st rack tom.

There are tons more pictures here: http://s988.photobucket.com/albums/af5/potsy24/Star%20Drums%20Restoration/

Cool! Since the kit is kind of rough anyway, you can have some fun with your restoration!

Three ply drums for $80.00 is very sweet.

From teverson-sr

I'd guess a few years either way of 1970.My grandfathers Ralston drums were around 72-and were similar. The pearl insert on the hoop is not painted, and is light colored-I'm going to guess it's either silver sparkle or WMP under the spray paint.Solid colors were not popular that early.HMMMMM-the plot thickens.......

Unfortunately there was no pearl inlay (or pearl anything). The hoop inlays were removed and the grooves were painted silver.

Those will be fun to work. The wrap is a bit of a question mark, but let's see how it cleans up and then we can make any adjustments. They are indeed a Star made kit, and that Acro seems to be right at home. How do they sound, warts and all, right now?

The wrap will have to go. It's already missing some chunks, and it's seriously like cardboard or something. I don't even think it can get wet. Sound wise it's hard to say, the rack tom has one lug with a bad insert, so it wouldn't tune up. The floor tom and kick have potential. It doesn't sound great, but you can tell thats mostly the heads. I don't think the chipping spray paint on the bearing edges is helping either. I didn't do anything with the non matching tom. The rims on it are so flimsy and bent and a bunch of the rods are rusted up.
