Hi, my first post on this forum: I ended up working in eastern Europe (Minsk, Belarus), and desperately need a drumset! Few second hand kits are on sale here, then I finally came across an ad. I have no idea what this is, could be some cheap, Taiwan stuff or something from Eastern Europe. Rack tom mounts look Sonor style, there´s a cymbal mount on the bass drum, the floor tom spurs are straight and the mounts are somewhat oddly placed (tho I think this guy has actually put the floor tom upside down ...). The hihat stand and one of the cymbal stands look like my old 70´s Meazzi, sort of. Any clues to what this is would be highly appreciated!

This seems to be some sort of hybrid set. Hi-hat stand is Amati (Czech Republic/Czechoslovakia), while the toms are German - my guess goes for Trixon.

Bass drum and floor tom don't look familiar to me at all, but from the color of the wrap, I'd say East bloc - reminds me of 80s Amati.

Snare looks european, too.

They should be playble (maybe except for the snare), if the toms are really Trixon, they're gonna sound very good, rest might be OK. The cymbals are crappy.

Hope this helps

Gilnar, thanks! I might muster some courage and call the seller, even though I´ll obviously have to do it in russian ... I was puzzled by the snare drum: the snares seem to be locked in place by a metal plate straight to the shell (primitive?), the hoops are solid but seem to have only 4 screws. And right, Paiste 101 cymbals are usually crappy! The kit might be worth the 230 USD, though.

230 dollars? Eh... if there's no other way... you're very likely going to need other snare and new heads for FT and BD (assuming they're not metric!), so think carefully...

I don't know what kind of modern stuff is aviable in Belarus, as it isn't a free country, but maybe some Sonor Force drums would be better choice, especially in terms of hardware functionality - sorry to say this at a vintage drum forum. East bloc hardware was sometimes very fragile and if not maintained with care, could easily break and become a pain in the a** to set up and use.

Checking the drums in person might be a good idea.

Fair point, 100 dollars would be better :). According to ad, most heads are new remo, so that should be ok. The thing here in Belarus is not a lack of imported goods, but rather that imported instruments are surprisingly expensive; most stores sell the cheapest Chinese instruments far more expensive than in any Western country. A used Sonor Force kit was at sell for 500 USD (!!!), without cymbals, from a private ad. Shocking, indeed!

Anyway, thanks for the input! I might check the drums out when it stops raining ...

You need to investigate this set-the snare is a parallel strainer drum-NOT crappy. They ,I believe are all of east/central european origin.Ralf is the member to contact about these drums.I posted a query regarding Russian drums, which ended up bringing up alot of these brands-Tacton,Deri,Sonor,Epinimi,Amati etc. Some are of high quality birch ply construction.

Aha! I googled Tacton and found some pics. The Tacton lugs and tom holder mount are almost identical (as far as I can tell) to these ones, and the same goes for the floor tom spur mounts, and probably even the snare drum. Thanks a million for the clues! The toms remain a mystery: there are loads of pics of trixon drums, but I can´t find tom mounts like these anywhere. I guess what I called "Sonor style" is really German style. This has gotten me so curious, I might grab these drums just to explore them ...

I thought as well without even looking that this might be a Tacton kit, the snare almost certainly is. Unlovely but very practical, as is most Eastern Bloc cold war era goods. The best bet is to go and play them. As for the cymbals, if you can live with them, you are far better off than trying to buy better, especially where you are. Can you imagine what good Zildjians would cost you in Belarus??? Even a set of ZBTs or Planet Zs??? China is not on the favored trading list with Belarus, so getting good cymbals from any of them will be over priced. And besides, those Russkies have listened to garbage sounds for so long, it only matters that they get live music, not oldy moldy cold era or 50 year old radio play.

A good drummer can make garbage sound good, remember that. It's all in the presentation. And don't let the sound man get in your way!

Bass drum and floor are definitely Tacton from 60-70 ties, inside of the floor tom should be painted in dark red,it is one ply shell with re-rings.Must check if there are original 16' hoop, not sure US made heads can fit in this hoop.Snare and toms are I believe Trowa former East German production, with lot of parts almost identical as Tacton.Snare is missing parallel snare mechanism and i think that snare is also one ply with rings. You need some strainer for him and you can make nice snare(I mean put a new one from some other manufacturer and drill new holes). Here is link to some pics of Trowa drums and you can check that they look like thos on your pics
