16" V.s. 18" Floor Toms

Loading...

I've been working on a "project" for an extended period of time and only need to find the floor tom I've been looking for to have it completed. Although my original intent was on obtaining a 16" tom I've found it nearly impossible to find one in the make, model, finish and condition I've been looking for to match the rest of my kit.

Just the other day I thought I had found exactly what I was looking for but discovered the tom was an 18 inch in lieu of a 16 inch.

Having never played an 18" floor tom in the past I'm wondering if there's actually a significant difference in sound quality when compared to the 16" version of the same make and model? I'm also wondering whether "fair market values" for the 18" versions would be higher or lower than the 16". The bass drum I'm matching this tom up with is a 14" x 22", while the rack tom I've got is a 10" x 14".

Any additional comments (i.e., "advantages"/"disadvantages" of one size over the other) would also be greatly appreciated.

As usual, thanks for your time and your help!Bowing

Because it's a 14 rack, the 18 would be a descent fit. I would do it as a temporary good fit until a 16 and a 13 rolled along. I'm not a fan of hitting larger drums (14 or 15 racks, 18 or 20 floors). There is just too much ... of everything. This is one mans opinion and in no way reflects the thoughts or values of this corporation.

Usually, 18s go for more. However, Slingerland sales seem to buck the norm. 16s, and especially 14 floors are the more desirable catches. Interesting.

Using a 22 as a foundation, my take would be a 13 and 16 fit. Again ... one mans opinion.

I agree with the previous post. The 18" might go well together with the 14" inch tom. I have both 16" and 18" inch floor toms on my vistalite kit and have often left one home to make transport easier. Switching one out for the other doesn't make much of a difference to my ears or change the feel all that much to me.

I am not sure about the question of value. What make and model are you looking for? I have seen 3 or 4 16 inch Slingerland floor toms on ebay recently (both wrapped and unwrapped) and one 18 inch. What finish too?

Good Luck,

James

Go for the 18. You'll love it. I'm playing 26, 14, 18 and have been for years. I have a matching 16 that just sits in the corner. I'd like to get my hands on a 20 one of these days.

16" floor toms are generally the least valuableof all floor tom variants...because they are easily the most common size.

14" floor toms are currently the most valuable and desirable of the variants

18" is also a very desirable size...and yes, there is a definite difference in sound. An 18" 3-ply Ludwig floor tom is incredible.

20" floor toms are....ridiculous -too much!

RogerSling: THANKS for taking the time to provide your input. I do appreciate it! The 13" / 16" combination would have been my preference put I came to the conclusion that it simply wasn't going to happen. Since I ended up with the 14" and it's in extremely nice shape I thought the 18" might work.

james: THANKS for your feedback also. If the sound isn't significantly different to your ears I should be just fine, being half-deaf and all!

What I've got are Slingerland natural maple (no wrap!) shells with reinforcement rings.

t.c.: At this time, any possible purchase of a 16" doesn't appear feasible since the only ones I've seen aren't even close to being in the condition of my bass drum and rack tom. The seller of the 18" has also got a 16" but he has no intention of selling it.

O-Lugs: Always a pleasure hearing from "the master." THANKS for your time and the information you provided!

My point was that I wouldn't even be concerned about him not wanting to sell the 16 because you'll like the 18 better anyway, being that the rack is a 14. Oh, and I know where there is a 24 that would fit in perfectly with the 14 and 18.

I own a couple Ludwig 3-ply 16"s and a couple 18"s, and honestly prefer the body of sound from the 18"s.
