Star 13 inch Tom Rim

Loading...

Dear Fellow Members,

Ahhhhh!!!!! When will it end?! Does anyone out there have a 13 inch, six hole early seventies Star tom tom rim in excellent shape that they'd consider parting with? The bottom rim on one of my toms has some flaking and pitting. Since the rest of the set is pristine...Thank you very much! I know that you guys understand completely!

Hey Brian, is it a Stick Saver (Slingerland) copy rim or a triple flange rim you need? Either way, I would just get a new one from drumfactorydirect. There really isn't anything that sets a Star rim apart from any other old, used rim.

Yeah, for the most part, unlike the wraps on old MIJs, the rims were pretty non-descript. That and many, many of these sets lost their reso hoops at some point, so using new rims on a MIJ restoration is a largely forgiveable act. I'm even sorta considering getting a new batter rim for my blue onyx Astro snare that I just finished because the original is so pitted and scratched up. And I'm the 'keep it original if at all possible" guy!

Thank you, fellow members for your feedback. It was certainly appreciated. I know that Star rims are certainly not worth their weight in gold but, there are a couple of details that make them interesting (flanged ones, six holes). The configuration of the hoop itself, around each hole is a bit longer and flatter than most over-the-counter rims. Also, the longest part of each hole is 7/16 inch as opposed to 3/8. I know that these are all details but, isn't that what we strive for when restoring these old treasures? I was very lucky today. I bought two Star 13 inch rims on ebay for $20.00. The seller, an American gentleman was kind enough to ship them to a relative in Michigan for me.He does not ship to Canada. He is also throwing in three near-new Remo Ambassador heads! I am more than pleased. Thanks again, everyone for your interest and support.

Brian,

I completely agree with you to be as genuine as possible.

So don't forget to mention, that each rim should also be stamped

with 'Japan' or 'Made in Japan' on the inside if the hoop, if I remember

correctly ...

Hello, vj!

Hopefully, when my new/vintage rims arrive, I can sort things out and see what I can part with. I will be more than happy to help if I am able. It's good to know that original parts are still valued above all else on these old kits. Hang in. In the meantime, I'll be on the lookout up here.

Hey Brian Thanks so much man! i'm trying to sort out a couple of MIJ kits i got recently and they are both star/tama but one's got the "A model" lugs with 3 stripped BD lug-nuts. the kit's a stripped covers job that lost it's badges and still cool as hell 3 ply shells that the small drums got an interior strip (with new screws and washers) the BD is original and the grey paint and 3 ply mahogany give the id away, the diamond consolette and (older spur mounts) date em late 60s I think. I haven't gotten heads back on the bottoms yet but oh boy these babys sound great! i can't wait O-my

My pleasure, Vic!

I understand completely. It's great to see such an enthusiastic, well, enthusiast! I'm sure I'll be able to help with the rim. Tomprrow, I'll email a friend who is a horder and, a lover of these ol' MIJ drums. I'll ask him what he has in his treasure boxes. Let me know specifics about your needs. I'll do my best.

Yeah, you're right! these old kits really do bang out!
