What's the big deal about someone liking Charlie Watts? How could anyone NOT be inspired by seeing a guy play great music for five decades?

It's just something I've noticed through the years. People put their favorite band's drummer in the Top Ten Drummers listing. The justification of list placement is based on digging songs from a popular group. In most cases, it really has nothing to do with furthering or impacting the art of drumming. It's more of a popularity contest of the current AOL radio. As far as Charlie goes, he's a very mediocre drummer that continues to dominate many Top 10 Drummer lists. That has always boggled my mind. A bands popularity (irregardless of how long they've been at it) does not equate to a deep and meaningful drummer.

The proof is in the pudding. I invite you to take sojourn back in time and review some readers poll of best drummers. What you will find (in most cases) is a semi-accurate directory of what was popular on the radio at the time. Why is it that artists like Dave Abbruzzese, Matt Cameron, Eric Kretz, Steven Adler, Tommy Aldridge, Mike Bordin, Sean Kinney, Will Calhoun, Deen Castronovo, David Silveria, and Matt Chamberlain (to name just a few) don't make the cut anymore? What happened? Did society get together one day and decide that their contributions were actually not as significant as once believed? They made the readers poll top honors at one time. Why not now? These artists were in bands that were popular at a moment in time. Because of that bands success, they were honored as some of the greatest drummers of all time. So, read into it what you may, but the facts don't lie. These lists are primarily based on what band someone digs and in most cases has absolutely nothing to do with the art of drumming.

I'm really not down on this thread and such. I was making a comment about the inevitable appearance of Charlie on drummers lists. It has continued unabated for years ... and will continue. He is what he is, I guess. His place in a very popular band has assured him of drumming legend, as undeserved as that is.

Putting together a whole "top 10" would take a little too much thought. Way too much long-term memory to dig through.

But I can tell you that Buddy Rich, Vinnie Colauita, and Antonio Sanchez would be near the top of that list.

Yes, but the reason why there are so many people who can play like Ringo is because Ringo played like Ringo! And all those kids (now grandparents!) wanted to play like that after they saw him on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Seriously! The BEST Ringo quote I ever read was this:

When asked if it bothered him when people criticize his drumming ability, Ringo responded:

"I played the drums in The Beatles."

Well, ten that come immediately to mind:

> Buddy Rich (THE Greatest Ever)

> Louie Bellson

> Sonny Payne (Most Entertaining)

> Jeff Hamilton

> Gene Krupa

> Hal Blaine (Cause he played on most of the recordings I grew up with)

> Johnny Klein (Hey, my folks watched Lawrence Welk)

> Nigel Olssen

> Tito Puente (I know, Latin Percussionist)

> The big guy with a shaved head, plays a red sparkle kit, recently played on the Faith Hill SuperBowl Special, I think I saw him with Clampton or someone in England. Name unknown...
