My first snare from the past a "Excellent condition DEL REY" in orange

Loading...

I got this off E-bay last week. I was shocked to see this snare in this color in almost perfect condition. I had a whole set in this wrap in1970 for about a month in my first band, but we were playing hard rock and I beat them so hard that the legs broke along with all the hardware on the first job. At the end of the show I did a Keith Moon and destroyed the whole set with help from the rest of the band, we were only about 15 years old then Laughing H I see the guitar player once in awhile and we still talk about that Del Rey set and night. Since this is my first post, I wanted to see if anybody has one like this or seen one like it. I may have been bidding against someone in this forum, "sorry", but I had to have it as a blast from the past and to show it to my friend from that band, it's been 40 years and I will show it to him this week. I cleaned it up a little and saw that it was in almost perfect condition and must have been kept in that case and put away a long time ago. It even had the original heads along with all the other original parts. I tried some of my drum keys from the last 10-20 years and they were too small for the tension rods, but I had an old Rogers key from the 60's that fit perfect. The only thing wrong was the throw-off didn't work, but I saw it was a loose rivet and pressed it back together, works perfect now. The owner must have put it away when that broke until it was found again , probably at an estate sale, because the e-bay guy I got it from knew very little about drums and had a really bad description, other than it was clean. There is no fade at all in the finish and no rust or pitting except on some of the washers on the inside. I just put on new heads and put some Canopus snare wires on it to get it to sound better. I really had to torque the heads down to make it sound like a snare instead of a tom with snare wires. So here is the before and after pics.

Wow, that wrap is insane! Cracked lava? That may be the 70s-est drum I've ever seen. Looks like shag carpet! Nice clean up job.

My daughter said it looked like a Koi fish, maybe a little Japanese influence. I did very little cleaning, it looked like it came out of a time capsule, I just wiped off the little bit of dust and finger prints.

We got this calender at a restaurant, sort of looks the same except no silver speckles.

Welcome to the VDF!! I saw that snare on Ebay and thought that it will be a nice addition to someone's collection...No worries, I didn't bid on it...I"m intrigued with vintage MIJ drums for many different reasons ~ the Japanese certainly knew how to make psychedelic wraps...I own a few MIJ's myself...Congrats on re-kindling the memories of the teenage years!

Cheers

The end result is that you are happy and that is all that matters...MIJ drums have a vertical grain in the wood...This is what differs them from other drums...i.e. North American where the grain runs around the circumference of the shell...The shell is made of Luan...This is an Asian form of mahogany, almost like plywood...

We have some MIJ specialists here on the VDF that can give you alot more info about your drum including value than I can...Maybe one of them will chime in...

Cheers

Nice Gretsch copy lugs!

I used to have a Teisco DelRay bass guitar....I bought it brand new for $44 in around 1970! Came in a thin cardboard box from the factory!

Great wrap, really.

Koi-fish-wrap - even better, points it!

Is the white case (never seen such a one before) the original one for that DelRay?

Doesn't that damper mechanism rattle while playing the snare? (Looks so ...)

Too bad there wasn't the rest of the set with it.......

MIJ drums like this are quieter drums,so for trio work, folk gigs etc,are good to use, instead of some LOUD Rogers kit.

Can you do a front shot of the white case please? Never have seen one.

Thanks.
