What is near mint condition??

First off, this is not a gripe session.

I'm posting this so others can see and learn from what has happened.

OK....

Not everyone's opinion on near mint condition may be the same, but I'm sure this doesn't qualify.

These are parts and shell from a Pioneer listed on eBay as being in near mint condition.

Thanks goodness I didn't pay a whole lot for this drum, and I was not expecting it to be in near mint condition due to the price I paid.

The issues were not evident in the pics, and the description said "It is in near mint condition".

If someone had their expectations up about buying this one, it would have probably gone back as a SNAD.

Well I'm off to get wrist deep in Flitz, Dawn, NevrDull, and the like.

Near mint huh......jeez if that's considered near mint condition, then the Ludwig marching snare drum I have would have been considered NOS condition prior to its restoration! LOL! (ya if we all remember, it was far from it!)

Yep, that's about as close as the drum is to mint.

Maybe it was kept outdoors by a mint bush?

Wow. That's......

Maybe the seller lives in a town that is close to another, more popular town, named Mint? Say, near Mint, Michigan, perhaps?

Good luck with all that rust and flaking........on the drum, too.

It looks to me like in this case "near mint" meant "I haven't laid a finger on this drum in the 55 years since my daddy bought it. It has never been abused with the likes of polish, oil, or a damp cloth, as that would ruin the originality of this fine instrument." .

KEVIN:

This is exactly why phrases and statements like "near mint", "excellent condition for its age", "needs a little TLC", etc. shouldn't be used in item descriptions. They're all simply too subjective.

The old saying that "one man's trash is another man's treasure" can also be applicable in the reverse, as seems to be the case here.

In regard to the rust issue, I'd highly recommend the use of a product called "Evapo-Rust". It was brought to my attention by a fellow forum member a short time ago. It's truly amazing how well it works.

Good luck with your "project!"
