I have been reading about sabains and Sabian was founded in 1981.

If you want to get technical, Sabian actually started in 1968 making Zilco cymbals, the budget line of the A.Zildjian company, under the name of AZCO Canada. Later they were re-named Zildjian Canada and this is where the first of the "American" K Zildjian cymbals were made. Then in 1979, Robert Zildjian (who was running the Canadian branch of the business at the time) had a falling out with his brother Armand after their father Avedis III passed away. He sued Armand, and in a settlement, got the Canadian factory and tooling, and the "secret" formula (which he already learned years earlier from his father Avedis). However, he couldn't use his own name of Zildjian (it was a stipulation that the two brothers agreed on) so he came up with Sabian by using the first two letters of each of his kids names.....Sally, Billy, Andy.....hence...Sabian. The ball really got rolling as Sabian in 1981 and the rest is history....

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Sabian as the company Sabian, then, didn't exist before 1981. The facility may have been there...but that's a stretch to say that the company has been around since '68. My understanding is there was a lotta negotiating going on when R. Zildjian split off....I am pretty sure they didn't just one day stop making Zildjians and start making Sabians w/o some retooling and re-specifying of the products....

When they did start producing their own branded cymbals then, they began with just the standard ones....the ones which so resembled A. Zildjians of the day.

I do not believe they made any hand-hammered ones for several years after their startup.

If anyone cares to find a Sabian catalogue from 1981-83 or so and see...it would be interesting to know.

I do believe James Walker's HH is older than C'Dad's HH.

BTW...while there ARE some similarities....neither of those HH's really resembles an old K...much....at all.[/COLOR]
