One Of The First Sabians Made???

Loading...

I just recently purchased what i believe may be one of the ealiest sabian cymabals made? It is hand hammered and looks like an istanbul k.It has really nice hand hammering and sounds wonderful!! These early sabians were made by the same artisians that made the istanbul k's and you can see the craftsmanship all throughout this cymbal!! The early ones had to use a generic RIDE stamp that was left over from the zildjian days.i am including a few photos, what do you think??

The Canadian K's were allegedly hammered by some of those same K artisans, but I've never heard any claim that the Sabians were. I do think that its likely that the Sabian guys learned how to hammer their cymbals from some of those same artisans. Also Gabe Zildjian helped in this capacity too. But I'm not convinced that this ink stamp came from Zildjian.

Here's was the scene as it was over at Sabian:

You've got left to right:

Gabe Zildjian, Robert Zildjian, an unknown, and an unidentified artisan from Sabian.

The oldest Sabians I've seen had a much smaller ink logo than the one shown here, and the size stamp used a block serif font. Don't have a photo, though!

Like one of these? I'm not sure which is older, but as I understand it, both are from the early years of the company:

I've heard the same "The Turkish artisans worked on early Sabians" stories. I can't confirm those stories - all I know is, these cymbals sound great.

I have a Istanbul Zildjian K cymbal, from 1950s.

This looks the same, so it could be from around 1940-1960.

1940 - 1960 covers an awful lot of territory there partner.

And lets get right down to the crux of the matter here.

What somebody's Sabian looks like doesn't have even the slightest thing to do with identifying your cymbals.

I know I'm coming in quite late on this one, but to be honest, what does it matter if it is an early Sabian or not? Does it sound good? Do you like the sound? That would be the most important thing to me, not the age of it or if some guys from the old K factory made it.

I generally agree with you, but to some, these are the kind of things that make life worth living. Some must obsess over such things. Nothing wrong with that.
