Paint scraper, putty knife is not as easily controlled. Make sure it is sharp, the sharper it is the less pressure you will have to use.

Thoughts on mufflers

I use one from time to time on my snares to get a certain sound. On my toms I bring it up just under the head, seems to make a difference to my ear.
