The satin wraps are very thin. They look ... unusual. I've wrapped a kit or two in them. The last one I did is at the school I teach at. It's ... unusual. Kevin, you will grow weary of the wrap if you go the satin route. My comment was made with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. You might want to go the off white lacquer as Lucky suggested...or just bring 'em down to natural wood and keep 'em that way. They would be beautiful in a stained and finished natural wood. This is a very cool set. You could also do a Duco finish (or have someone else do it). No mater what you do, it's gonna be great. Those drums have such style and class. Great find!

Than-you Lucky and Mcjnic.... I went so far as to look at some satins at the usual wrap purveyors, and yes, I believe most of them would be inappropriate, and yes, Mcjnic, I know that sense of humor of yours when it presents itself... I was laughing my butt of over here when I saw the Orange Fire Satin!! There's a Neon Lime Satin on Jamminsams that got me going too!!

Lucky and all... If I do a lacquer finish, can I add a few clear coats to give it some depth/protection? And should I add gaskets under the Zephyr lugs? I would have to fabricate those myself... anyone know where to get the raw material for custom gaskets?

Lottsa questions, I know, but I'm just like babes in the woods about this stuff!!

The guy that is doing my piano black slingies is putting a black, maybe flat paint and then putting multiple layers of lacquer, gloss, on top. From what he says they will be very thin coats which will keep them from cracking. Can't wait to get them back!

That sounds like what I've been speculating on.....

Hope they turn out nice, Lucky.

I really don't know that I should do the actual painting of these myself either.

I could really botch it up good. Perhaps I'll just do the prep work. Are you farming out the whole job, or just the painting?

Awesome kit! I'm going to second a vote for natural wood finish. Maybe a mahogany stain. Good luck and congrats again!

....lovin' that vintage sound

Thanks Questfordrums....

I just gotta get my mind made up and go forward. I've had this kit for some time now, and have made no real progress. I really need all the input I can get, and I appreciate everything thus far! Keep it coming!!!

BTW, I'm curious, did you find a head combo that works for you for your Student Radio King? I have one also, and would appreciate some info....

Here's mine... it's a '63 I believe

I would love a natural mahogany finish as well. I suppose that it could be decided once the existing finish is gone, and I can see what's really there to work with. If it looks dinged up too badly, then I could move on to another finish option..

Just the painting. I trade work with a guy who has a painting shop. He finishes cabinets and such, he's also into cars so he can do some cool stuff. The problem with trading work is you have to wait, the cash jobs always come first!!
