Rogers Pink Strata Pearl Kit

Loading...

I just wanted to share this Rogers kit that I have. I think it is Pink Strata Pearl. I was hoping maybe someone could confirm/deny this. The lighting in the photos make them appear to have a red tint but I can take better ones if necessary. The sizes are: 13", 13", 14", 14", 16", 22". One rack tom and the 16" floor tom are less faded than the rest of the kit and both have white mufflers rather than black ones (probably add-ons from a later date). One of the drum heads reads "Music City," a Philadelphia music store owned by Ellis Tollin. I have heard the Pink Strata/Oyster Pearls are fairly rare. Wine Red Ripple seems to look similar. Can post serial numbers soon.

EDIT:

I just finished cleaning these drums up. I checked for wrap fading when I removed the hardware, but to my surprise found none. I am trying to nail down which pieces in this kit were originally purchased together. I believe the original kit consisted of the kick, snare, one rack tom, and the 14" floor tom but I can't say positively. Although these 4 drums show the most similarity in color, they are not all exactly the same (the floor tom and snare drum are the same although very slightly off from the kick drum. The rack tom is also close but seems to have a darker tint). I was hoping someone would be able to shed some light on Rogers' serial number system to help date them. Below are photos of each drum and their serial number. They are all Dayton era.

Was a 4 piece, someone drilled the double tom mount, and added another mounted tom to the kit...........

The other FT was added later too.

Very cool! Yes, that finish is one of the more uncommon Rogers' wraps. They look like they are in need of some TLC, and it is a shame about the BD being drilled for a double tom mount. Nonetheless, you've got some fairly valuable drums there, and it would be a worthwhile investment of your time to give them a good detailing.

The great thing about Swivo era Rogers drums is that extra mounting plates that were installed can be swapped out for other types because they all use the same 4 hole mounting pattern. Example: The double tom mounting plate can be replaced with a knobby mount or a single swivo receiver plate. I have used an extra Swivo plate to accomodate a cowbell holder or a splash cymbal arm. An extra unused mounting plate can be closed off with a blank chrome oval plate affectionately dubbed an "OOPS" plate. Try to find one..........

I had a Rogers set in Pink Strata that consisted of a 14x22 bass drum with 9x13 and 10x14 mounted toms and a 16x16 floor tom. The floor tom had a Knobby mount near the top of the shell that I used for a crash cymbal mount some times, and for a stick tray mounting device at other times. I have stated that I don't obsess over little things like nuts, bolts, washers, tension rods, etc. But, the big differences between the patterns and colors of the four drums bothered me. The serial numbers were fairly close to each other. The wraps simply didn't look as though any two of them came from the same batch of Pink Strata laminate. Pictures are on my other computer. I'll post them later.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

You're not thinking of using that pizza for replacing that missing floor head, are you?

If I had to guess (based on the "Music City" drum head), I would say that the extra Rogers mount was probably added at the Music City store in Philadelphia. Of course there is probably no way of telling for sure.

I may decide to list this kit in the "for sale" section so if anyone is interested in buying these please let me know. I would be willing to separate the two add on toms (13",16"). I understand it can be annoying when forum members ask for offers but I am not completely sure what this kit is worth considering the +/-'s (14x14" floor tom, matching snare, added tom mount, possible fade in wrap).

How dramatic was the difference in strata wraps used throughout the 60's? Would the brighter more vibrant color of the two add on toms be consistent with this change or would this indicate fading of the earlier drums? I plan on removing a lug to check the fade issue asap.

Haha, no I don't think so.

My observations lead me to believe that the Strata wraps (as Rogers called them) or Oyster (as Ludwig called them) and whatever Slingerland called them all had minor differences from one sheet to the next sheet. But, the differences from one run to the next run could be major differences in appearance.

I see, thank you.
