I've always had at least 2 mounted toms (if not more) and 1 or 2 floor toms. Both single and double bass as well. It would take some getting used to for me having played 2 mounted toms so long. Also depends on the type of music I'm playing too.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

One tom, yes. Rail mount, no.

I have never cared for the looks of the one up, one down drum sets. They look off balanced to me and just sort of weird. I will never buy one, that is for sure. Funny enough though, I rarely ever hit my second tom on a two up, one down set, unless it is in a tom run, so in summation my response is all based on appearance.

have a wonderful evening

Always played 2 up 1 down until about 5 years ago, when I got into vintage. A guitarist asked me the other night how long I'd been playing a 'jazz setup' since I played the same set of black maple Pearls 10/12/16 for 25 years. I don't really like rail mounts. They look cool I suppose. I prefer Rogers hardware. My favourite drum album is probably Abbey Road. So I have always loved the recorded sound of 2 rack toms. It's what I'm playing now.

The rail is vital, but a pain in the behind! I get envious when I check out the fabulous flexibility of even the cheapest Chinese tom holders, but it passes when I sit down and play my old Ludwigs and think of how awesome I look!

I love and play both setups. With that said, I am definitely in a more creative space with the one up one down config. It forces me to focus a bit more, I guess. It just feels more free to me. Obviously, it is an ergonomic thing, as the setup puts the ride and toms in closer. That speeds up the confidence to execution bit.

Although some of my kits are two up, I only use a single up, two down. However, just today, I was behind a two up one down for most of the day...

I always do my darnedest to find the second floor tom. I even found the 2nd FT for my Avocado Strata Standard kit!
