Ludwig Mod Orange?

From Danster63

SAZ,Great kit! I always get excited to see another kit like my own. Until I found this forum, I had never seen a MOD Orange kit -- in any configuration. Yours is definitely the most complete I've seen, and it appears to be in great shape. Congratulations on keeping it together and taking such good care of it. Do you play it regularly? I hope so.D' DrummerDanster

You KNOW I play it. Just got done doing it. That's MY set if you know what I mean. I've had it for 36 years. I have 3 other 60's sets that I restored completely, and I have never played any of them not even once. There's something about playing MY set.

Maybe thats because mod orange was the coolest finish ever made! I got hooked on mod orange around 1989 when I saw the Doors video live at the hollywood bowl. John Densmore had a down beat 20,12,14 in mod orange and used it throughout the Doors carreer. Back in 1989 I had no idea that the finish was that rare as I was still in high school and had not really started to collect yet. The collecting bug got me in 1990 and I always told myself that I wanted to find a mod orange set. I had no idea it would take me almost 15 years to get one! I had seen them before but I wanted one that had no mods or extra holes. Nice sets you guys both have!

Great pictures. Thanks for that. Where are they from? I like old automobiles, too!

New member here. I, too, am a Mod Orange fan. In April 1969, my dad bought me a Ludwig Hollywood kit, brand new, in Black Oyster Pearl. There was a Mod Orange kit in the showroom window that I drooled over, but the floor manager offered a better deal on the BOP kit. So, hey, I loved BOP from Ringo, and anything with a Ludwig badge on it was going to be just fine with me. But I never forgot the Mod Orange kit.

Because a very nice vintage Ludwig kit in Mod Orange is so hard to find, especially one with no fading or other color change, I decided to buy a reissue from Ludwig in 2006 just before it was discontinued. Though the reissue wrap, like the "bowling ball" wraps of the 70's, lacks the 3-dimensional depth and sheen of the original oyster pearls, the colors are satisfying and women especially comment on the drums at gigs. My wife encouraged me to get Mod Orange when I showed her the color chart. Like has been stated in an earlier post, one either loves it or hates it, and the reissue definitely did not generate much interest from buyers it would seem.

Here are 2 pics of my kit for comparison to the vintage Mod Orange. Thought that might be interesting to some. As can be seen from the pics, yellow stage lights surely brings out the original Mod Orange hue.

Those are nice pictures but unfortunately that is not the set that John used with the Doors. I am not even sure if John knows this because he has been quoted as saying that his set is at the petersen museum. The set in those pics is a hollywood 22,12,13,16 like the sets you guys have. It is just missing the 13. I saw this set once on top of some slot machines in las Vegas with a Doors logo head. If you look at the bass drum in those pics, there are 10 lugs per side. That is a 22. John played a 20,12,14 downbeat set with the Doors and a 20 only has eight lugs per side. Johns set also had the rail mount for the single tom and a mount for the cymbal on the bass drum. I wonder if John is aware that this is not his set? I think his old rodie Vince Treanor might have the 14" floor tom. Here is a pic of him with it.

Your reissue looks very nice! I have a 2004 20,12,14 reissue as well my 1969 22,13,16. Have you seen the import element sets Ludwig is just coming out with? I am really liking the looks of these sets! here are the new ones and my 2004 set from a gig.

Thanks for the pics, wflkurt! I've seen pics from Summer NAMM on Ludwig's Facebook site and these new mod finishes excite me, too. Seems they are only for the import Element SE. But Ludwig is planning some new wraps for the upper end kits that have crushed glass in the mod finish, like Bun E. Carlos' touring kit for Cheap Trick. Now that really excites me!

You have a good looking reissue kit, too. I'm really glad to communicate with someone else who owns a reissue. I wish I could find a virgin 9x13 or 10x13 tom with large lugs to match my 9x12...

Just came across this post.

Nice to see some other Mod Orange fans.

I have a late 60s kit I was lucky enough to get a few years ago.

I also just finished wrapping some

late 60s orphan basket cases I found on eBay.

Very happy with the Jammin Sam wrap. Really does justice to

the original Ludwig wrap. Also seems to be very close to the wrap on the

new Ludwig Element SE.

Here's the original wrap:

Here's my rewrap kit:
