post some pics, i'm curious... sounds like a "hollywood kit, is it 22,12,13,16??

make sure to treat them well, because the psychedelic colours (mod orange, psych. red and citrus mod) are some of the rarest colors and a kit in good shape is worth quite a few dollars!

Thanks for the responses. Here are a few pics of the kit. Also, some additional info: When I got this kit, it had all the original (I assume) hardware. However, once I could afford to, I upgraded the cymbal stands. I still have the Speed King bass pedal though; I really like it. The kit came with 15" Paiste Formula 602 high hats and two Avedis Zildjian rides -- 20" and 22" (the 22" has sizzlers). I've added a few cymbals over the years but have kept the originals. I've also replaced the heads, as you can see. The interior of the toms are a little beat up as I used to play them with no bottom heads and sometimes used them for small accessory storage when traveling -- hey, they weren't "vintage" back then. I gigged with this kit for two years while in college and have played them off-and-on ever since. My mom bought them form me (2nd hand) when I was 12 or 13, and I've had them ever since. I hope you enjoy the pics, and I welcome your comments. BTW, sizes are 22, 12, 13, 16.

Wow.. You have a beauty there for sure.. I'm not so good on ID-ing but somebody will be in here to nail it down for sure. "Hollywood" looks correct from the book I'm looking at (long shot on a really early Big Beat).

I think Mod Orange is beautifully correct. I have heard from Luddy lovers that Mod Orange (next to Ringo's Oyster Black) is the most sought after by collectors.

And... Paiste 602 hats!!

I looked at your set in the gallery and now I see more pics. Could you maybe get a pic of the date stamp? That set has got to be a late 1967 set. Those ball bat style mufflers were gone by Dec 1969. By 1969 the mufflers looked like the ones found on your snare drum. What are the serial numbers? Beauty of a set!

First, however, let me say that I checked out your MySpace page; great pics and I heartily agree with your comments on enjoyable music! Also, your '69 Mod Orange kit looks great. Anyhow, back to the mystery at hand...

Here are three more pics of my drums. You're right about the dampers; they don't seem to match the time frame. Also, the serial numbers are 549xxx and 550xxx (2 of each), which seems to pre-date the stamp. Nonetheless, here are the pics -- one of which proves (I think) that I'm not seeing things.

Any further comments from you Ludwig fans out there will be appreciated. I wish I would have thought to ask the guy I bought them from for a little history, but I was just glad to be getting a real kit at the time. I never really expected that they'd be the only "grown up" kit I'd ever own. D' Drummer

Some of the "givens" about what time frame ludwig fitted what parts to their drums goes out the window from time to time......the painted interiors could have been left over shells that finally got assembled in 1969, hence the ink stamping from 1969.....same with the BB mufflers.....leftovers for whatever was pre-drilled to the shell.....its been known to happen before, and what is normally accepted for the late 60's era doesn't always apply. I had a jazzette (18" bass drum) kit from 1968 finished in black panther....the bass drum had a white interior and the toms were a natural maple. Some of the mounting hardware had script logo engravings and some had the new block logo. The heads were the script logo weathermasters printed on them yet the bass drum had the small block logo decal on the front of it.....

Thanks. I've heard from others that 69 was a "transition" year for Ludwig. I guess my kit got caught up in the mix. Any idea if its uniqueness makes it particularly collectible (not that I'm planning to part with it). Just curious, mainly.
