Slingerland,black beauty...

Hi guys,

I have a question for the forum that I'm sure you all can help me with. I have been researching the value of a Slingerland black beauty, I understand that Slingerland made two models of these, and was curious to the value, and if you could even find one. Steve Maxwell shows one on his site, but no price. Just thought you historians out there would have an idea of price. Thanks

That`s gonna be what ever one is willing to pay for it. The reason being, you have nothing to compare it to, there`s very few of them and no market value to look at and see if it`s too much or too little.

The only fact is, it will be a lot for a complete functional one. I`m not sure but I think all but one or two are accounted for.

Did you find one ??

I agree, they are a rare breed. I have never seen one in person and I suppose very few have ever seen one either. I was doing some research and reading Mr. Cook's book and thought I would bring it up on the forum. I suppose if I ever ran across one, I'm not rich enough to purchase. If really wanted, Ludwig would be the closest at least their are a few out there. Thanks for the commit.

I believe these were made in the 20,s and 30,s. They were brass shells dipped in a oxidation bath. The newer reissued ones were plated and painted black. This is what I have researched.

The Black Beauties (Slingerland first coined the name before Ludwig) were made from 1928 until about 1934. However, I believe a slightly later version exists with engraving and streamlined lugs. Prices on these range from $8000 on up to about $20,000. The most recent (I think this is #14) was on display at the Chicago Show by collector Larry Matthews. I'm not sure what Iamdrummer means by a reissued version that was painted black, though. There was a "White Beauty" but that was a wood shell drum painted white with Artgold hardware.

The drum in the second photo is even more rare than the Black Beauties. Real gold plating! To my knowledge, there are none in existence....but who knows?

Thanks Cooper,

I was referencing Rob Cook's Slingerland book second edition, 2004, page 165. He was stating, " that the first was brass shells that were dipped in an oxidation bath, newer re-issue were actually plated with a black finish ". Maybe I was confused, but anyway, I talked to Steve Maxwell, he told me that the one he has for sale, price $14K. Way out of my range....Bucky
