Anybody care to follwow this project as I go along or would you just rather just skip all that and see the finished job. I would be happy to post pics along the way but its going to take a while due to the cabinets are selling good right now.

Do you really need to ask?? I was hoping you'd post pics along the way. ;)
Sometimes I feel like Im starting too many threads.
Yes, absolutely post pics along the way.
Indeed. I like to live vicariously through your formidable carpentry and finishing skills.
Okay here we go. I really like to post these pictures and narrate what’s going on. I always wanted to write a how to book.
Picture one is the drums in my shop after I brought them home. I bought them from a young man that answered my “drums wanted” add on Craig’s list. I wasn’t too excited about them at the time and only offered $100.00 for them. I even encouraged him to wait and sell them to someone else for more money. But he wanted money now so he made the deal for the 100 bucks. I felt I should have paid him more for the drums and its been bugging me so I am sending him a surprise gift.
Picture two is a close up of the floor tom. You can see there is a problem with the wrap.
Picture three is the results of a failed attempt to paint the drums. Rogers blue mist is a super nice color. The color will change from light to dark blue depending on what angle you are looking at it. I had my color studio make two colors using two different products. The light blue started out as a white opaque base so it’s a solid color. Then I had them make the darker blue using a clear as the base. I sprayed the test drum with the solid light blue first then the transparent dark blue. I thought it might have an effect close enough to match the old wrap. I was wrong. After a failing attempt to find some of the original wrap I decided to go with KOA veneer, it was offered by Rogers as a cortex wrap on the xp8’s.

Now that I have decided on the koa wrap it is time to get to work. I had actually started on this a couple months ago.
I like to place all the parts in different bags to keep them organized. Removing wrap with a heat gun is not so bad but getting the glue off is another story. I used xylene for the first time. It works well but boy it really smells so get a charcoal filtered respirator if you’re going to use it.
I was able to save all of the badges and grommets. The big R badge is ugly in my opinion. I was going to leave them off but my wife has convinced me to put them back on.
At the end of this day I have the wrap and glue removed from all of the shells, yay! Now with any luck the koa veneer will arrive tomorrow. I still want to clean up the insides of some of the shells and spray some new finish on them. And I noticed the floor tom shell has a small amount of delaminating going on so I will need to glue and clamp those areas. I really hope to wrap the drums next weekend but my cabinet job comes first.

Now that is entertainment! Great fun watching this project.
Not entirely wanting to hijack this thread, but I am still really interested in finding out what company produced these wraps. I always thought they were pretty classy. They do not seem to exist anymore however.
Looking forward to te next installment Jeff!
