The spring fix works very well.
The white teflon plumbers tape is actually the way to go as it increases the diameter of the shaft enough to fill the stripped out spaces. The knob will not come off. I tried to pull it off after tapping it on. No way!
The tape is only about .75 cents per roll as well producing no mess.
