Zildjian Hollow Logo

Hi guys, I have a question regarding a 20" Confusion Avedis cymbal... I mean, Zildjian Avedis cymbal. It has the hollow ink logo printed on the underside, but it has the 1960's stamp with the 3 dots present in the Arabic script. I have another Zildjian 18" Flat Ride cymbal with the hollow ink logo, but that one has the thin 1970's stamp. I've heard these ink logos started appearing on Zildjian Avedis cymbals towards the end of the 1970's so I've often wondered why my 20" cymbal has the ink stamp and the 1960's stamp. Can anybody explain this to me? My best guess is that I just have an early hollow logo. Was the stamp with the 3 dots continued up until the 1970's when the hollow ink stamp was introduced? Help2

i'm starting to see more and more of what you mentioned. its my understanding that the hollow inks didn't come about until the late 70's. the 70's stamp with no dots certainly was around before that. its almost as if they resurrected the 60's 3 dot stamp for some of the hollow ink models. ive run into at least a half a dozen or so of these in the last few months. zenstat and I chatted a bit about it as well. also, we've seen some earth rides that has the last stamp of the 50's on them. head scatchers to say the least.

Cheers Mike. I'm guessing that Zildjian had some of these 60's stamp cymbals in inventory, and maybe they decided to print these with the ink logo and send them out the door, but I don't know. Maybe they were not too bothered about what stamp they were using around this period, just whatever was in the stamping press at the time? Stamping press? Whatever you call that doohickey. Let's just say Myth Busted and we'll move on! I'm satisfied. :D

No these are not old stock cymbals. Sometime in the late 70's/early 80's, they started using a new stamp with 3 dots but almost all the ones I've seen have a CO versus Co which was used before then and note that they continue to have a thinner font for the word Zildjian than the 60s stamp similar to the early 70s stamps.

Some examples that I own.

Hollow ink stamp late 70s/early 80s 16"

Solid ink stamp early/mid 80s 16"

Oh and also note no dots with USA (versus U.S.A. for the 60s stamp).

And in the 60s and late 50s stamps the ZILDJIAN Co appears in bold compared with AVEDIS and the rest of the text. They are the same in those ZILDJIAN CO stamps from later on. No bold.

Chromeo, we really need pics of yours to go much further. There are even more varieties of pressed in stamp than we have spoken of so far which might be from that era.

You give us proper documentation of yours, and I'll throw in my current consensus dates for when the hollow ink logo appeared underneath, and when the solid ink logo appeared on the top and bottom. Deal? :D

OK, my hollow logo ride does not have the thin stamp and the CO. It has the 60's stamp. That's what I've been trying to say. :)

Here are some photos.

Great Scott! Sorry if that sounded a bit like something Captain Kirk would say. :D Couldn't resist.

I'm seeing those stamps you posted above. My 18" Flat Ride (hollow logo) has this stamps. The 20" however has the 60's stamp. Have a look at the photos.

Cheers.

I know these photos can't prove anything. I could have just taken a photo of a 1960's stamp, but why would I do that? You'll have to take my word that all 3 photos are the same cymbal. I've ordered another hollow logo 20" from eBay. The seller didn't take a photo of the stamp so I'm looking forward to comparing it with this cymbal. When it arrives. :)
