I lived in Nova Scotia in the 70's and they were making "Geniune Turkish" cymbals in New Brunswick at the time. They were made at the AZCO factory that I visited around 1976. I bought, and still have a 16" AZ "Made in Canada" cymbal I'd say in 1976. So I know for sure that they were making them there then. I saw another AZCO cymbal around 1974.
At that time, the Canadian government was murdering the prices something fierce. You'd pay 30% more than you would in Maine. To avoid that, GM was sending "almost complete" cars from Flint to Oshawa, Ontario to avoid the tariffs. I've always suspected that that was part of the reason for the AZCO plant. They had 50 gal drums filled with ingots, black metal pancakes, that had stuff like "20" ride" painted on them. I suspected that those were made in Quincy and shipped up to sunny Meductic. It was maybe 10˚F when I was there.
The folks there were super nice and spent a lot of time with us. When we arrived, the place was empty and we walked in. It must have been lunchtime because no one was there and we just walked around for awhile. I remember walking into Robert Zildjian's office and thinking "this is weird".
