Zicko Drums Last viewed: 4 minutes ago

I have an over-sized original Zickos kit I purchased in 1971 or 1972. It did not come with a snare and did not come with supplied tom stands. The drums held up well and were extremely loud. It is a clear set with 9x12; 10x13 mounted toms; 18x18 floor tom and 18x24 bass - they were like cannons. Still have the set in my barn. I bought them to replace my moonglow Gretsch rockstar set, which I also still have. Those were the days :-)

These drums (not Zickos) were also made by the same Kansas City fiberglass fabricator. I can't recall the name of these. They were also very short-lived, though!

Greetings All.

Those bowl shaped beauties were called "Artistry".

I saw them in a 1981 Paiste profile of the great

Sonny Freeman.

From the photo it is very difficult to see how they

were tensioned. Internally perhaps?

As he previously played Fibes during the '70's it

would follow that he preferred the boom of fibreglass.

Hey Mikey777, would it be too much to ask if you could ship it to Sweden? I am very interested in adding it to my Zicko´s. I have a clear acrylic kit from around 1974, 24" x 22",14" x 12" and 18" x 16". They sound awesome! Zicko is virtually impossible to come by over here, so getting one from the US seems to be the only way. I do know there´s at least one more kit in Sweden, but he´s not into selling...

Please PM me if you´re interested!

Hey all! I joined this forum a while ago, but it's been a while since I've stopped by. I think I had answered a few questions on this topic months ago...

I have 3 of the Zickos Super Sonic fiberglass kits. I have heard/read that there were less than 10 produced & I have even heard as few as 5... I suppose no one really knows.

Anyhow, 2 of the kits were white, but it was tired-looking & I had them professionally painted for me. One of the kits is bright orange & I had a Ludwig Supra-Phonic painted to match. With the snare, it is a 6-piece - Bass, 2 rack toms, 2 floor toms & snare.

The other was painted in gloss black & I had a Ludwig Acrolite painted to match. This kit is a 5-pc, Bass, 2 rack toms, 1 floor tom & snare.

The last one is a "Swedish" blue & that color is factory... no bottom lugs or hoops either. 3-pc with bass 1 rack & 1 floor tom.

I love these drums & I think they sound surprisingly good considering the ugly bearing edges. The kicks, in particular, sounds ridiculous! Big, warm & punchy.

I love Zickos drums so much. I recently acquired a clear, late 60's/early 70's, double bass kit (2) 22's, (3) 14's! & an 18x18! I just added 12, 13, 16 & a matching 6x14 snare. This kit is a beast. It is purely for fun.

I will try to post some pictures in the next week or so.

The modern Zickos Drum Co. closed down last year. I live in St. Louis, and as Zickos was out of Kansas City, there are a few people in town who own the newer drums, as well as the original Zickos.

If you talk to other acrylic freaks who were around for the original Zickos, they will all pretty much tell you that Zickos were very, very well made - way better than "the" acrylic drum producer of the time, Ludwig. The shells were were thicker than Vistalites, and produced a warmer tone than the Vistas. Zickos also produced some very solid and sleek-looking hardware.

I know a guy who owns both vintage and modern Zickos, and says the modern ones were better made and sound better than the originals, mainly due to the improvements they made with the bearing edges.

I'm a Ludwig freak, and have owned Vistas for a long time. But if I could ever get my hands on a Zickos in good shape, I'd be all over it.
