Your opinion is needed: 50's WFL Snare

Pounder!...

Mine is indeed chrome, as the higher end drums all were during this period of manufacture. Chrome was EXTRA back in the day, which is why there seems to be so many more drums in nickel. Buddy always had chrome hardware on his sets, but most of the public bought the slightly less expensive nickel.

JFBL's drum is most certainly a re-wrap... that is NOT a WFL WMP wrap. You know what though, for the sake of argument.. ( and I mean nicely! ) .. JFBL:

The original wrap was actually tucked into the inner ply on the inside of the shell, making these era WFL's very difficult to get completely stripped.. meaning.. you probably have remnants of the original wrap still inside the drum, yes? Then... check the outside seam and see if it stays on the outside of the shell as any other wrap usually is. Pics would be GREAT!!

Really? I didn't know that.. I thought Ludwig started the shell-making with the wrap on it in the 60s to speed up production processes! But alas, I have probably forgotten more good Vintage drum info than I have remembered.. Thanks for the info, Tommy!

This is is most certainly a rewrap. This first pic shows the original 'wrap into ply', and the second shows the original wrap under the second layer. It looks as though a considerable amount of the original wrap was left on when the drum was rewrapped... This all leads me to think that maybe I should strip and rewrap this again with a period correct WFL White Marine Pearl pattern. If it was original, I'd leave it alone.

Speaking of wrapping this with period correct WMP, check this from Precision Drums. Which of these wraps best matches your drum Tommy? I'd think either Continental or Vintage White Marine?

JFBL!...

Yes indeed... and I KNEW that was the case with your drum too!... and GLAD you were able to positively confirm the what's what, so to speak. So, to answer your question regarding which wrap would be closest to the original...

The "problem".. ( problem in quotes as it isn't really a problem per se ) .. is the chip size/pattern of the original vs. what is available today. That said though, the closest you can get in a ready to go, non shrinking, no seams opening up later! WMP, would be the "Antique WMP". The color of that wrap is EXCELLENT as it truly does replicate slightly aged WMP, and the chip size/pattern while not being quite as large as the old WFL WMP is still very good. I will say that the "Antique WMP" is almost a dead ringer for the 60's era Rogers WMP and the color is real good in that regard also. Rogers 60's era WMP drums that require a re-wrap look GREAT in this particular wrap... quite original looking, but I have begun to digress... sorry! LOL!

That would be my suggestion for you JFBL.. and .. to be absolutely sure, contact Precision Drum and have them send you a sample of each the Antique and the Continental. Form your opinion on which you like better after you compare both! Whichever one you choose, your drum is going to look so much better and more period if you will. Keep us in the loop as your project continues!

Could one of you fine people be so kind as to tell me the best place to buy replacement snare wires for the P87 Classic strainer used on this drum? I understand Puresound made some models that fit but were then discontinued. I tried the VDF search function first but didn't find anything. I found some clues and a few things online...

Thanks Mike. Anything specific I need to be looking for other than P87 Classic? Grateful the set of wires I have on her now are fine. So I've got some time.
