Yet another Slingerland snare question

Loading...

Hi,

Several years ago I bought a Slingerland snare but as I still have not seen any similar ones, I feel that it would be very interesting to get to know more about the drum.

What I do not get to match is the serial number on the badge and the badge itself. According to the Slingerland serial numbers page the snare drum was made in 1975-1977 or so (the serial no. is 247241). But on the badges overview on the same website, it says that the "Football black & gold Niles" was made in 1981-1986. Could someone please help me out with this one? I'm pretty much curious to know all there is to know about this snare. Thanks.

That is the Super Sound King

Click here for a picture of the one I have.

Also, you have the correct badge the second badge you mention is not the badge you have. The Dr CJW badges are very accurate.

I will get you a catalog shot of that drum so you can get more info

Thank you for quick reply! Have I understood it correct that this snare way less common than the Radio King for instance? A Google search for the super sound king generates about 112 results, as a search for the Radio King snare results in more than 15 000 results. Why the big difference? Do you know anything about the target audience for the Super Sound King when it was released (perhaps I will get an answer to this question when I see the catalog shot you mention)?

It was going after the Ludwig Super Click Here

No idea on production levels, but "Radio King" was used for

many many years on Slingerland drums since the 40's or 50's

and still used now!

So the Super Sound King had limited time in the lime light.

Personally I have seen more Super Sound Kings then the brass

Radio Kings so there are some around just not a lot.

I was going to guess that the drum you have was from right around 1969...most of the Super Sound Kings had black / silver badges...that one has the black / gold badge. I think that drum came out around 1969, so that would be an early version. I checked the serial # with the Dr's chart, and voila, looks like around 1969. (Look on the lower left section of the chart...the first version black / gold badges. Very nice drum.

Right you are Rich, late 1969 is very possible. Actually, this strainer with snare guards is the "final" Slingerland version of the Super Sound King throw-off, somewhat different in cosmetics from the first version 1967 - 1969. And with the serial number at the high end of the black & brass period there is also a good chance this is early 1970.

Time to resurrect this old thread of mine :)

I have no clue of why I never asked about a pricing estimate for my Super Sound King but as I'm thinking of getting a matching snare drum for my pearl-shell Slingerland kit I might have to sell my current one.

Through a quick search I found that someone wanted about $300 for it. Does this sound accurate?

Grateful for any help Cool1
