Yard Sale Find #2!!

Loading...

ok so, I think I made a good score today. I bought these 3 drums at a yard sale for $65 but I have a lot of questions.

The serial numbers are all around 82944....The owner said they were 1965...is this correct?

The sizes are 24" bass, 20" ft, 16" ft.....are these un common sizes?.....the 2 floor toms are missing the bottom hoops....are these easily found?

the bass has 4 legs.....is this common?

I don't know if I should make this my next project and restore them or if I should sell them and use the money towards a completed set.....

I only have one vintage set...a 60's ludwig SS and I would love to have another but not sure if I can afford all the pieces this will need..

also....the bass drum has no holes for a tom mount....What size rack tom would have gone with this set?

please excuse my ignorance.....I'm learning....any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated

first off KILLER DEAL !! the missing rims the 16" will be easy to find. the 20" will be a hard find, the twin bass drum spurs are factory and aren't as common as just one set of spurs. here is the serial number table, http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_2_serial_numbers_page3.html

Phil that's a GREAT deal. Well worth the time and effort to put them back together. Pretty easy to find a mounted tom(s) in LBP. Great sizes too!! 20" floor is the big boy. $165 for 1 hoop is steep. Like Mark said place a ad here and keep a eye out. I see them on ebay every so often in the $80 range. Still expensive but at $65 for your investment your still ahead of the game. If the bass is a virgin (didn't see a mount or holes?) you can use a Set-O-Matic setup with a stand. Slingerland made them for both the D shaped tube bass mount. And also a round tube version for a stand. Of course you can just use a snare stand like many do. You can even hang them off a cymbal stand with one of those clamped arm thingys. Sweet deal thanks for the pics.... your gonna love em~!

That's an insanely great score! I 'officially' hate you! :p

The rack toms come up once in awhile, Phil. You'll have to keep your eyes open and probably your wallet too when one does appear. You did amazing with that yard sale find. I'm packing my sh*t and moving to Jersey!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Really nice find on the kit... The serial number puts the kit at early 70's and the fairly rare badge placement of the FT would also confirm around 71-72..

Cheers

Some of you guys have all the luck and that was a fine example of "being in the right place at the right time".I hope you can complete this set as it would be well worth the effort and finances if you can. From the $65. you spent you`ve got about $400.-$500 to play with in that set value.Nice timing on this one Phil and best of luck with your decisions on this set.It will ROCK!!!

You can put a generic bass drum hoop on the bottom of the 20" tom, and use a reversible pedal to make the 20" a second bass drum when you feel the need for two bass drums. The Ludwig Speedmaster and Gretsch Floating Action reversible pedals are very inexpensive--like under $50 apiece. The oversize drums would call for a 10x14 front tom to compliment the other drums.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
