Yamaha Y-Badge

Loading...

I had a showcase type thingy in a bar on friday. I showed up with my cymbal case & pedal and lo and behold there was this Yamaha Y-Badge on stage. The woman doing the sound thought that the bar owned them. I got excited because I know the owner of the establishment pretty well and was thinking that I could maybe trade him a newer kit for them.

The technician thought the bass drum needed some muffling and the kick wasn't ported so I gladly offered to do it, just to get a look at the shells. They are really light so I was curious. Anyway, the owner of the drums (who turns out not to be the bar owner) showed up while I was hunched over on stage with his kick drum opened up. I felt a little embarrassed, but he knew who i was by reputation and actually got a chuckle out of it. Turns out it was his dads kit, bought 1n 1974, and will stay it his family.

Anyways, I really enjoyed tuning them up and playing them & thought I'd share some pics. Hopefully someone can tell what the wrap is named and what the shells are made of. I was thinking Birch outsides/Luan insides.

nice kit. You are right about the shells - Birch/Lauan. The colour is Red Ripple. As you probably found, they are really nice drums when tuned up. It's always nice to show up to a gig and find a nice vintage kit to play. Doesn't happen often to me though.
