Yamaha power V

Loading...

I bought a Yamaha kit off of Craigslist some months back. The are the Power V series. 10-12-13-16-22 with a ludwig standard snare. A old drummer friend of mine is in town for thanksgiving and we were talking about drums. He plays the power v drums and told me they were made in England. Well this intregued me so I have been researching about them. I have learned that they were built in england in late 80's or early 90's when Yamaha owned Premier. I also found out they made a kit called Power V Special. Does anyone know what the difference is between the Power V and Power V Special?

Thanks,

Hello Poppy.according too catalogs,Power V was made with black interiors like Premier APK for example, and the wood is birch with some lauan, and Power V special, have long lugs from hoop too hoop, clear interior and mahogany and poplar shells. There is a third variation (pics 3 and 4),and these is Yamaha stage custom in fact, called Power V Special.Diferent tom mounts and shell component(baswood). In some point Yamaha cut production in England and started in Indonesia.I dont know do they made Power V Special there,or they called the drum Stage custom immediatly

Hope this help a litlle

I decided since both the drums came from the same factory and both have black interiors i would just compare the 2. The premiers have much thinner shells and it looks like the inner ply on the premiers is a ply of wood, because there is a grain in the wood the runs from top to bottom of the shell.

The yamaha drum's grain runs around the drum. I removed the tom bracket from the yamaha and cut the wrap a little, peeled it back and it's wood.

My first kit that I purchased in 1996 that I still own was a Power V special. I got it new at sam ash. It has the long lugs, clear interiors and is made in Japan. I have heard about power v's being made in England and indo, never have seen another set made in japan. Nice drums, maple interior ply, very consistant, SHARP single 45 bearing edges. I emailed Yamaha a while back, gave them the serial numbers and they told me these where made with the same air seal design as the high end drums.

I have the heaters o n in the garage warming it up. im gonna tune these yammies up and see how they sound. I dont have a snare for them, so I went pawn shopping the other day and came up with a black 5 x 14 sound precussion snare for $35. I bet that is still better than the mirage hes playin',
