Yamaha Dating Guide

Here it is, I finally found the guide 1980-present. David, can we make this a sticky, since it is a link and not really getting into their proprietary software, or whatever claim they might have if we posted the actual tool?

Wow thanks jonnistix!

What a freakin' cool link. I just dated my vintage Recording Custom kit (mentioned in another thread) and the year of manufacture is late '82-early '83 instead of the mid/late 80's like I thought.

How come they come up with a dating system first that could only work for 10 years? I've seen other companies do that too. Don't they think they might live longer than that?

(I'm not joking. Seriously curious why they'd do that)

PS. I must still prevent myself calling this the greatest dating site on the web Walking.

Actually, the guide runs from 1980 to present. For older kits, they suggest contacting them via email and they will happy to assist in further dating.

I mean, they use two character from 1980 to 1989, and then they have to switch to using three from 1989 onwards. I would think it'd be easier to start with three right from the start. Perhaps more, if you hope to hold out a very long time :p.

Nevertheless really interesting link ^^.

Yamaha had been around since the 50s or so, so why didn't they put serial numbers on their drums that made it easier to determine their born-on date? And use a system that was easy to determine the date, like (fill in the blank) did?

Let me know when you fill in that blank, MrTurd, because there are no other drum companies that have done so. In fact Yamaha's system is probably more accurate than any of the other companies.

Thanks Jonnistix for the link!

From this I determined my kit was '87, Some from April, some from May.

What model is a GF, I thought they were Stage Customs?
