Yamaha D-22

Loading...

Hi all, this is my first post so go easy on me ;)

I'm reasonably new to vintage drums and new to Yamaha vintage drums for sure.

After a long time planning to get a Luddy I ended up picking this Yammy up instead. Not the kit I've been dreaming of but something that will still serve me well without the price tag.

I have really only been researching Yammys over the last week but from everything I've read this kit is a D-22 in Black Willow wrap. Although it doesn't look all that black, it looks to be the closest to that than any of the other pearl wraps. The wrap is in great condition only a little dull I guess. The guy that I got it off suggested using cut and polish to shine it up. Does anyone have any other tips?

Interiors are grey and shells are 3 ply and in good condition except for a few extra holes from the rail mount being moved and apparently there was another rail mount which had a bongo holder on it which I doubt was an original feature.

Sizes are 22, 13, 16 and 14 snare and serial number is 5647 and consistent throughout the 4 drums.

Sorry for the long post and average pics, I'll try and get some better ones up later. Just hoping someone can confirm if this is a D-22 and the finish is Black Willow.

Cheers.

WOW that is a beauty! I think it is quite remarkable that you got a snare like that to go with it. I bet those snares are not very common. I understand that those are great kits and surely you have a pretty one - love the color!

I especially appreciate that you pulled the trigger on a Vintage MIJ instead of a Luddy. I appreciate the American drums as much as the next guy - I just am very pleased that another drummer has discovered that there IS some very good Vintage MIJ out there that gives buyers more bang for their buck.

When you feel like getting another kit - try a stencil MIJ kit - one with the thin shells & rerings. You will be blown away at how good it will sound when tuned and fitted (heads) with some know-how.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Based on your pictures and the sizes, you own a Yamaha D-22 in Black Willow. Those are great kits. I personally own 2, one in Brown Willow and one in Blue Willow. I looks like the bass drum hoops on yours were swapped out at some point. It most likely had metal hoops originally. Also I had to laugh about the snare drum. I have 2 metal snares that came with my kits and each of them has a different throw-off. And yours is different from both of mine. Not sure why Yamaha used so many different throw-offs back then. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your new kit.

Thanks for your replies! Yeah I'm pretty happy with the decision to go with this kit. I havnt yet set it up to play but I'm sure I will do soon enough and I can't wait to hear them. I've only read good things about these kits.

As I said I'm pretty new to vintage kits and really only been looking at luddys so I was pleasantly surprised to learn about these old Yammy kits.

The hoops are DW wood hoops, but I do have the metal ones too.

I was excited by the fact that it came with a snare as no other kit that I looked at did, unless I was to pay much more money of course, and budget was a big consideration here. I wonder if there is a catalogue of all the snare throw offs haha

I'm super stoked with this kit already I can't imagine how I'm going to feel when I set it up to play!

Thanks again :)

Nice drums! I don't see too many vintage Yamahas around here; for MIJ's it's usually either something from the Tama/Star factory or Pearl.

You've probably seen this already, but your kit is the cover girl on the 1968 catalog:

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/yamaha_catalogs_drum_sets_1968.html

It is said that "catalog" kits, that is, the exact configurations and wraps or finishes that appeared in catalogs have extra mojo from all of the dreaming drummers through the years gazing at the pictures and wishing they had one of those.

I have a Slingerland New Rock in Blue Agate, which was always the catalog wrap for that configuration.

Interests me, too, to see what different companies call similar wraps. Yamaha "Willow" looks a lot like Ludwig "Oyster" to me, but then a Rogers aficionado would call the wrap on my drums "Onyx."

I can understand the extra mojo, having spent my life drooling over modern catalogues so I can only imagine how much mojo is in 40+ years of drool!!

I just google imaged your Slingerland kit and man that looks nice.

I'd never heard of "Willow" before I started looking into Yammys, hadn't heard "Onyx" as a wrap either.

I've never been into Pearl kits, didnt mind Tama. I had a Mapex when I was younger and that finish was called Abalone Red.

Nice kits these, and very well made. I sold this one about a year back but I gigged it quite a bit before selling it and it sounded very good and was utterly reliable.

If you want to clean them up then there is plenty of info on the forum about how to do it. My kit came up really well using Novus 2 polish on the wrap. It makes all the difference.

Thanks for the tip Fayray! I'll give it a go. Any idea where I could find some rubber floor Tom feet for this kit? Mine only came with one. Also what head would work well with these toms? I'm thinking Evans G1 or 2. I use EC2 on my other kit but I don't think they'd suit these drums.

Thanks alot2008 it's a club I'm glad to be a part of.
