Picked this up today. Fell in love with it straight away. Never had a Yamaha set before so what can you guys tell me about it? Anyone know how to date them from the serial numbers? Sizes are 12,16,20 and 14 snare. Ill post more pictures tomorrow when its not dark and ill be sure to post more once its been given a good clean up.

cool kit. Great you got the matching wood snare as most came with a COS snare. You can't date them with the serial numbers. I can say they are very late 60s - early 70s. Similar to this catalog set but with a 20" BD instead of 22". Lots of info on here about these excellent MIJ drums.

Ok so the weather here is pretty bad at the moment so its been hard to get a good shot of the kit with some light on it but this is the best I can do for an overcast day. I gave it a quick clean up and polish then played it at a gig two days ago. I Can tell you its sound is worth every cent which Im attributing to its very heavy weight. Also the tom is 13" not 12" as mistakenly first said. After going through a bunch of catalogues like the one above (thanks Fayray from across the ditch :P ) I believe this is a D20 kit.

Nice! I sold my kit but kinda wish I still had it. It was not as original as yours and had two mounted 12s so the D225 and the steel snare (which is very good). It was a really good kit. I still have my mint C220 though

You'll get great service out of those drums and they won't give you any reliability problems.

Beautiful kits there Fayray. When you play them, was it with the rail mount? Ive heard the slot mounting plate saps sound quality from the tom so I left mine off for now.

Alot2008, I play pop/rock/jazz kind of stuff with these at the moment.

I play the tom on a snare stand like you. The spade mount does choke the sound unfortunately. I guess there's a lot of pressure placed on one side of the shell which will distort the shell enough to choke it, especially when you hit it.

You guys know that you CAN use RIMS mounts with the spade style of mounting right? It may require some drilling (the RIMS mount piece) but easy to do and indeed effective.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
