Wrap "Cancer" on a Leedy...

Loading...

I picked up that green sparkle Leedy off of eBay, week before last. Hardware, cleaned up with ease... The shell however, eh, not so much. Polished up beautifully, however it has tiny black freckles/cancer around the wrap. No large spots, almost like black stars around the wrap...

I'm still learning when it comes to restoration, but at this point I really think it's just the age of the wrap, and there will not be a way to resolve these spots.

I've got my dental tools out, all my polishes/cleaners etc...

Any suggestions, if it's at all possible to work-away these black freckles?

The wrap still sparkles, but it's just not 100% because of these blacks spots...

Any input is much appreciated...

Post a pic.

probably not, unless you wanna attempt the seldom-tried-but-sometines-heard-of sandpapering of old wraps...in which the wrap is hand-sanded down with a very very fine grit paper and then repolished. Member toniblanco has done it with BDP, and I once stumbled on a website which described the procees on sparkle wrap...

But I, personally, am too chicken to ever try that.....

Wow, sounds like something I would try, but I agree the risk-factor is too high. I could end up ruining the wrap...

The wrap still looks really cool, seam is tight, and the drum itself is in great shape.

I think I'm going to play it safe, and let the wrap show it's age...

Jaye, thanks for the input!

Joe

The trick is to WET sand it using 1000 grit or finer wet/dry sandpaper. Also use some dishwashing soap mixed in with the water. After you do this then you use a rubbing compound, then a polishing compound to polish out the scratches from the sanding. I've done this on a couple of old WFL snares I've owned that were supposed to be white marine pearl......more like light green pearl or yellow pearl. It works somewhat well, but you must be careful. The black may be in the sparkle itself now, from underneath and you may not be able to do anything about it. I've seen that happen with champagne sparkles....they get green splotches/specks in the wrap after a while if not well cared for over time. Not much you can do about it but live with it if its in the wrap.

I'd have to see a picture of that "cancer" but if it is what I am thinking than sanding won't do any good. That "cancer" is just some oxidized metal flakes. No sanding is gonna fix that.

If it bothers you that much than get a new wrap...

Thanks for the feedback... I've got some 2000 grit s/p and I'm really contemplating trying the wet-sanding. However, after magnified inspecton, it's in the wrap... I may leave it.

Thanks again.

Yes, that is definately in the wrap. Wet sanding won't do a thing for you in this case.
